Wich graphic card is better for Chroma Key effect ?

dan_lachance wrote on 9/12/2025, 4:03 PM

I have a hard time with the NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3050. When I use the CHroma Key effect the picture sometimes freezes, and the processor (Intel Core i5-9400F CPU @ 2.90GHz) is running at more than 90%.

Does it mean the graphic card cannot manage the chroma key effect ? If this is the case, then wich graphic card should do the job?

BTW, I have 32 Gb of RAM, and that does not seem to be the problem.

Thanks

Hi

We need more information - which program and version number and which Chromakey effect, the built in feature or, if installed/available, BorisFX BCC Key & Blend?

Hi Dan.

When you last posted a similar problem you were using an nvidia 1030 I think and trying to use the effect on HD video. If you are now trying to render 4K video I think you are running into similar problems as before as the 3050 is a 3060 GPU with a lot of it functionality capped and marketed as a capable 1080p card and not 4K. But I think it's now worse than that personally if you are trying with 4K material. Your CPU will also be struggling I think if you just try to upgrade the graphics card now. On the other hand, if you are still dealing with HD video then the problem may lie elsewhere such as John Baker is alluding to even if you are not using the Boris Effect version and assuming you have not upgraded from your previous version of MEP / MMS.

Hi

. . . . Does it mean the graphic card cannot manage the chroma key effect ? If this is the case, then wich graphic card should do the job? . . . .

The issue could be caused by one or more factors such as video format being chromakeyed, GPU drivers, see note below,, or an unrelated program/software running in the background.

I did some load tests with the Magix Chromakey and the Boris Chromakey on my PC and laptop , specs are in my signature.

Test parameters:

Track 1: background video 1920 x 1080 25fps

Track2: Chromakeyed video - 4K UHD 3840 x 2160 h.264 (AVC) 25 fps with AAC audio

VDL 2026 settings Device options set to RTX 2060.

Results:

% usage figures are CPU / Intel UHD 630 / RTX 2060

No ChromaKey 7 / 11 / 43

Magix Chromakey 34 / 15 / 50

Boris Chromakey 80 / 10 /50

These are average figures of 3 runs, with and without the effect applied, from my PC and Laptop, preview playback was smooth.

Magix chromakey is using the CPU, with a small % of the iGPU and RTX

The Boris chromakey is predominantly CPU with a small % RTX usage, no iGPU.

Note: As per Magix recommendation use the Game Ready Drivers. I am on the latest update 581.29 for the RTX 2060
