Zooms

DRORENGEL wrote on 6/5/2025, 3:21 PM

As Im a basketball video editor, I find myself creating content from very far 'gym cameras' which are in the walls and film the game from a far. as I mark the 7-10 sec of the player's play and go inside with the zoom to see better, it always gets to the spot slowly, and then just as he about to score, the zoom wide up outside again creating a wierd view. why cant the zoom go all the way to where I wanted and then stay in that postion rather than go way outside in 1.5 sec to the original far view which is not good.

@DRORENGEL Have a look at the keyframe timeline below the Zoom control window, there's prob a keyframe at the end or further along, delete it using the buttons at the head of the keyframe timeline.

PS. Zoom is just auto animated Size/Position/Rotation, double click the keyframe timeline header 'Size/Position/Rotation' to open the Size/Position/Rotation control window for greater control of whats happening.

Assuming you're using a Magix editor, Camera/Zoomshot is the way to go. While it is just an implementation of Size/Position/Rotation, I find it easier to visualise where the crop box is moving to.

Do not use any of the automated CZS effects. They are canned and only useful in very specific scenarios such as panning and zooming on photos.

Just click on the CZS effect button, then start moving the crop box about.

In your case, you're missing the anchor points/keyframes. You need 4: the first is to set the starting screen before the zoom commences. The second defines the size of the crop box (or zoom amount). Move the Play marker along a bit, then drag the crop box to fit over your play. Now move the Play marker along again: note the crop box won't change size. Now set a 3rd keyframe; this will provide the anchor to hold the crop box for the time from the previous keyframe. Lastly, move the Play marker along again and resize the crop box to the final size. The fourth keyframe will be added automatically.

You can change the crop box size by jumping to the appropriate keyframe and resizing it. You can also change the timing by dragging the keyframes along to bunch them up or spread them out.

It's a great feature and is much more versatile than simply using Size/Position/Rotation, dragging your video around.

Here's a quick and dirty tute I've just made for you:

All my forum comments are based on or refer to my System 1.

My struggle is over! I built my (now) system 2 in 2011 when DV was king and MPEG 2 was just coming onto the scene and I needed a more powerful system to cope. Since then we've advanced to MP4 and to bigger and bigger resolutions. I was really suffering, not so much in editing (with proxies) but in encoding, which just took ages. A video, with Neat Video noise reduction applied, would encode at 12% of film speed. My new system 1 does the same job at 160% of film speed. Marvellous. I'm keeping my old system as a capture station for analogue video tapes and DV.

Yes. I suspect you're using one of the presets and not manually setting up the zoom because what's happening is you're zooming in but then it's immediately going back to the original size.

My YT tute uses exactly the same procedure you need: zooming in on the goal area then holding there (then zooming back out, but you don't need the last bit). Just follow that tute and you'll see how the keyframing works.

And also, could you tell us what program version you are using? Help>About will tell you.
