Greetings Magix community,

'The Summertime Song' music-video is based on a song by Mungo Jerry in 1970. The song was a 'shuffle song' about the summertime and was very popular throughout the 70s. My version of the song is midi sourced at bitmidi.com based, with many alterations and additions that I added to the midi source. All of the sounds in this video and music track are made locally in my own studio with my own instruments and resources. I produced this song keeping everything as close to the way such a song track would be produced in the 1970s.

Instruments used:

Solina Ensemble string synth as a violin (hardware)

Moog Mother 32 euro rack synth (configured similar to a Mini Moog (hardware)

Two Gibson Les Paul electric guitars doing 'voicing' (vst based)

An old slightly detuned piano (vst based)

An early 1970s Fender Rhodes piano (vst based)

An upright acoustic bass instrument (vst based)

A FET Transistor Pre Amp (hardware)

An Echoplex tape delay (vst based)

Myself making 'bottle jug' sounds ;)

My Moog synth also helped create the 'wash board' shuffle sounds.

My many thanks to the digital artists that provided the excellent images for the video.

Thank you all for listening and enjoying the 1970s sounds and fun that are in this piece ;)

Mark ;)

Great track, giving just the feel of original with your own additions, which is perfectly balanced, good work

A delightful and inventive cover of the Mungo Jerry classic, "In the Summertime." It’s a wonderful smorgasbord of sound that takes the familiar foundation of the original MIDI file and injects it with a vibrant, playful energy.

I enjoyed the synth choices—who would have thought a Moog could so convincingly imitate the rustic charm of a washboard? The inclusion of "human bottle-blow" sounds is a nice touch, adding a layer of organic texture that really sells the carefree, sunshine-filled vibe of the song. The mid-track "booms and thunks" at the break are amusing and keep the listener smiling throughout the journey.

Beyond the humor, this piece serves as an entertaining exploration of how far we’ve come in music production. It’s a wonderful nod to the pioneers who were layering and building tracks on 4 and 8-track systems back in the day, reminding us that the spirit of experimentation hasn't changed, even if our tools have evolved into software like Music Maker.

The accompanying visuals and clips were perfectly selected, pairing beautifully with the music to complete the experience. This is a bright, nostalgic, and well-executed piece of production.

P.S. YouTube sometimes has video of Mungo Jerry performing the song. Real hippies with afros and sideboards and the trendy clothes of the day! Another sign of the times is the line "Have a drink and a drive". That wouldn't fly nowadays with drunk driving laws. A few other lines were somewhat cavalier towards women, which probably wouldn't fly either these days. "if her daddy's not rich you can do what you please" or something like that, if memory serves.

Well done!

Hi Mark,
A really nice interpretation of this song by you.
I know the original song from back in the day and always thought it was cool, too. The guy had a great voice.
💯👍👌

@Philip-J

Thanks again for the effort you give in your comments ;)

I have always experienced that a song or instrumental piece has a life of it's own. But it had been very popular over many years whatever the times it was the summer song. I let two guitars do the singing in this, my arrangement letting the song be what it wants to be ;)

My best wishes!

Mark ;)
