HEVC codec for Canon Log 3 files?

BlueSkyBonsai schrieb am 19.07.2021 um 09:43 Uhr

I just loaded up a C-Log 3 video file from my Canon R6 into Movie Edit Pro Premium 2021, and it could not read it, I had to purchase the latest HEVC codec, which I did so. Then MEP Premium imported my file ok. But, unfortunately the video clips all appear badly corrupted in MEP Premium, and unusable. In an external viewer they play perfectly well (I use MVP in Windows 10).

So it looks like the HEVC codec is incapable of handling C-log 3 files. Has anyone else had this issue?

@BlueSkyBonsai

Hi and welcome to the forum.

So it looks like the HEVC codec is incapable of handling C-log 3 files.

I very much doubt the gamma curve of the recorded file would affect playback in MEP.

Please download the free Media Info utility and analyse one of your clips, then paste the complete text view into your post.

Also please supply full details of your computer specifications including processor model number, GPU('s), etc.

Hi Peter, thank you!

Magix Support have just responded to say that they have been able to reproduce the issue, and that they have raised a bugfix request. They will "address this problem in our next meeting together with the developers".

For information I am attaching a screenshot of the corrupt visual here:

It's not just the playback in MEP; when I export to MP4 (any size) it also exports as corrupt output. So perhaps it's during the import that MEP cannot handle the data correctly.

I can try the Media Info utility on my clips. Like I mentioned, they all play fine in MPV.

Hi

A sample non confidential video clip about 10 secs long would be useful for us to have a look at the issue on our PC's - upload to a file sharing site such as Dropbox, We Transfer, etc and post a link to it.

Do not post it on to the forum, Youtube, Vimeo etc as they will change the file rendering it useless for testing.

. . . . Like I mentioned, they all play fine in MPV . . . .

Unfortunately the video playing in MVP gives no indication of what will happen when imported into a video editor.

Hi Dave

Good to see Magix have identified the problem but that does not help you in the near future. You may need to convert the footage in a converter program or shoot with AVC 8 bit 4.2.0 instead of HEVC 4.2.2 10bit.

Was the problem evident before you applied the Lut or after? IOW is the problem with the Lut or the format of the footage?

You mentioned it played OK in an external player but this is not an indication it will play in an editing program as NLE's can not access all the codecs formats available in Windows.
