Magix Movie Edit Pro crashes when trying to open up another tab.

Spad schrieb am 12.01.2021 um 23:02 Uhr

I'm using version 17.0.3.178 (UDP3), I have 16 GB of RAM, AMD FX-8350, and an Nvidia GTX 1060-6GB.

I was working on a project a couple days ago just fine, just pictures, text, and music with some simple fade transitions. The project was sitting at close to 30 minutes. But when I opened it up today and tried to access any of the other editing tabs (ex, Effects, Audio.) the program just crashes. The video playback and audio all work fine, it just crashes when I try to edit anything.

It was working fine before, now it doesn't! Any help?
(Also, let me know if there is any more info you need from me!)

Hi and welcome to the forum.

Is it just this project or others, including a new test project?

It is only with this project. I've tried another project, and a brand new project, and they both worked fine. Only getting issues with this one project.

emmrecs schrieb am 13.01.2021 um 11:28 Uhr

@Spad

Since the problem occurs only with this one project I'm very much afraid that points to corruption of the one project file, for reasons completely unknown.

If you have any earlier autosaved versions of the project (with file extension .BAK) can you open any of those? If so, choose the one which was created latest - it will not necessarily be the one with the highest number - if it opens successfully, immediately save the project under a new name and then continue working. If that newest backup fails to open, go to the next oldest and try it, and so on.

If you can't get any backups opened [the backup files .MV_ should be in the same location as your saved project (MVP) file], a drastic move would be to reset MEP to defaults:

File>Settings>Reset program settings to default. You'll lose any shortcuts you've created on the Import tab. You may lose other customised settings as well.

Re backups, I was horrified to find that a project I have been working on for months is not being backed-up, despite the familiar mouse-stealing backup/save motions occurring every 10 minutes. Backups from other projects exist, just not this one. I saved the project with a new name and now MEP is backing it up automatically. Not Happy Jan.

@emmrecs

If you have any earlier autosaved versions of the project (with file extension .BAK)

Jeff, my backup files have an "MV_" extension. The filename before the extension is BAKx eg:

Perth Crew_BAK2.MV_

My struggle is over! I built my (now) system 2 in 2011 when DV was king and MPEG 2 was just coming onto the scene and I needed a more powerful system to cope. Since then we've advanced to MP4 and to bigger and bigger resolutions. I was really suffering, not so much in editing (with proxies) but in encoding, which just took ages. A video, with Neat Video noise reduction applied, would encode at 12% of film speed. My new system 1 does the same job at 160% of film speed. Marvellous. I'm keeping my old system as a capture station for analogue video tapes and DV.

Hi Alwyn.

Yes, agreed about those BAK files, my mistake!

However, given it is only the one file that seems to be a problem for @Spad I would regard the option to Reset to Defaults as somewhat "overkill", I think.

This is getting frustrating, since it's looking like I'm just loosing projects left and right.

Hi

. . . . I'm using version 17.0.3.178 . . . .

This is MEP 2018.

In the Program Settings, Display options tab try changing the Video mode to Compatability mode (Video for Windows) and check if the 'Hardware acceleration . . . .' and 'Hardware encoding' options on the Import/Export tab are unchecked - if they are not try unchecking them.

"I've found another project that is doing the same thing. Crashing when I try to open another tab."

In both cases, did the project backups have the same problem?

I'm wondering if perhaps the issue arose because the projects became corrupted somehow as you edited them. With one of them newly opened, can you generate the crash as soon as you perform one specific operation? If so please describe that step in detail.

Hey, sorry for the late response.

What I do to repeat the crash, is open a project, click "Effects" and then it crashes after trying to load it for a few seconds.

Unfortunately, now it's always crashing.
I started a brand new project, and went straight to effects and it's crashing.
So the program is unusable until we can figure this out.

Okay, it's started doing it again.
While I can keep resetting everything when this happens, that wouldn't be preferable.

Any other ideas for what might be causing this?
(The only settings I've changed have just been movie project settings. Resolution and framerate.)

Not really although you might try the following.

In Windows, go to Windows Settings \ System \ Graphics Settings \ Make sure the Reduce Latency is turned on under Hardware-acceleration GPU scheduling and further down under Graphics performance preference that you add MEP to the Choose an app to set preference. Use the Browse section to find the MAGIX Video deluxe exe. (or similarly labelled version) and set it to Let Windows decide or if you have the option Power saving.
