Hi Terry

You are correct - I mixed up the different versions when I was looking at the mp4 advanced option.

MX is different 2013 and 2014 are the same.

Gentlemen,

I have posted my tutorial but the video is just a green screen. Audio works. I contacted the Magix_editor contact (found the name in the tutorials) and advised them, but nothing has been done since Monday. Is there someone else I should contact? Should I just delete the video and upload it again using different export parameters?

Here is the link to the same file but in Dropbox:

https://www.dropbox.com/s/kka9yxquworydjg/Tutorial%2001%20VdG2MEP.mp4

It works fine there, at least for me.

I exported the file using File - Export Movie - Video as MPEG-4. Here are the parameters that I used:

MPEG4 Export (MP4) incl. HTML Frame Software:
Video: 720x576p; 25.00 Frames/s; H.264 1640 kbit/s
Audio: 44100 Hz; Stereo;  AAC
Size estimate: 231733 kByte

Under Video Codec:

Checked MPGE4 H.264

Multiplexer:

Checked MP4/3GP and Streamable

HTML:

Checked Export as website

Version 1.1308.1308.2 X1E9 (DS)

Thanks,

Hi John,

Did you use the Flashplayer export setting from the drop-down under Export movie > Video as MPEG-4. I recall that was the stumbling block for me way back. But I see that you know about that from your earlier post up-thread.

Only watched the first minute but it looks truly professional, well done!

Edit: After breakfast I continued watching in my browser (Firefox), but had a crash at about 2:40. Totally locked, with audio like a pneumatiuc drill! Had to use PC reset button. While PC was rebooting I played it successfully beyond that point on my iPad, so clearly some conflict on PC. After reboot I accepted an automatic invitation to update FlashPlayer and I'm just about to try it again, first in MSIE then FF. Have also downoaded the MP4 and thay played OK, including the problem point.

BTW, when I first used the Direct Download to get your MP4, a 73 MB file resulted called Test VdG routes.MP4. I'm guessing some timing problem with Dropbox?

Edit (0950): Pleased to report that FF played the whole tutorial this time.

Hey, thanks for that lead about travel animation. At  a quick glance that seems to imply the tool can import any KML? Will get on the case soon.

Hi Terry,

I'm not sure if I used the Flashplayer preset, but I probably did as the setting 720x576p; 25.00 Frames/s; H.264 1640 kbit/s is only available as the Flashplayer.

I think you probably click on a previous link that I had sent you.Glad you got to see the tutorial. If I don't hear anything from Magix Editor in the next day, I will replace the video.

Here.com - Wow! I hadn't tried it. It is clearer than Google, how is that? I just did a screen capture, and pasted it into Xara and the clarity is great. Even the other one in Charlevoix is much clearer. Now I know what to use.

Thanks,

John,

The first walk I animated using the GPX import facility that you alerted me to just happened to be in a widerness area of the Anza-Borrego Desert State Park, California. Just my luck that the TRA map shows it largely full of 'NR' symbols, which presumably means 'No record'!

https://www.dropbox.com/s/122idjh6zbfpt22/20131219-AnzaBorrego-TRA.jpg

https://www.dropbox.com/s/wvymo5j4ldx126e/20131219-AnzaBorrego-PlumCanyon-TRA.jpg

Q1: Does the built-in VdG map of that area look the same, i.e. lots of 'NR'?

Q2: Does VdG have the GPX import feature?

TRA certainly accelerates the task of preparing animations of my walks (I have hundreds yet to do!). That might even outweigh the less flexible mapping, compared with my usual repertoire: Memory-Map, Google Earth, Bing  here.com, etc, most with options of 2D or 3D.

From your work it sounds as if I could possibly have both with VdG (if it imports GPX).

--------------------

BTW, re our discussion in the parallel thread about durations, this particular 4.3 mile short walk had only 135 GPS trackpoints. With the Duration set to 10 s, the TRA animation took 20 s, consistent with my earlier findings. But the exported WMV took roughly half of that. There was a 2 s delay at the start (unlike the TRA, in which the track appeared at once) and it arrived at the destination after 12 s.I'm speculating that there was also a symmetrical 'padding' of 2 s at the end. So that would imply a WMV equivalent of 10 s - as per the Duration box.

But for much longer walks, I don't yet have a grasp of what's happening.

Terry,

A1: The built-in map in VdG is worse. There is only limited resolution as the map is within the program, thus the reason to import maps. See the images below to see what happened to my Angel Woods walk. The image at 95% shows the island of Montreal but very blurry. The map is in the lake instead of on land, as these are the coordinates according to the Google map and then imported and placed at the same coordinates in VdG.

A2: Yes, VdG can import gps data. The second image shows the GE map imported into VdG. First I imported the gpx into Google Earth then with the image flat and aligned to north I saved the image as a jpeg. They purple trail was the result of reading the gpx coordinates into GE. I read off the coordinates from each side of the map in GE and noted them. Then I went into VdG, created a map using my exported GE map and placed it at the coordinates indicated by GE (top, bottom and 2 sides). The map went into the lake. Then I imported the gpx file into VdG and the trail (black line) also ended up in the lake but on top of my GE map and very close to the GE trail. A slight translation northwards of the GE map and I would have a match. Note that the image is zoomed in to the maximum. This is one of the problems with VdG.

I will ask VdG the question as to whether or not the zoom level can be increased, and if they can improve on their map resolution and at least get the coordinates better in the next version. Seemingly the Vasco Street maps allows for increased resolution, but I don't see how, as the maps are brought into VdG and subject to the same limitation, unless that is, the map is brought in as per my tutorial, in which case gpx coordinates are useless.

One thing to note with VdG, it can handle up to 2500 gps points. If there are more than 100 points, the program asks if one wants to decrease the number. In my Angel Woods case I had 787 points but accepted 100. The GE map has all 787 points.

Image 1 - zoomed to 95% in VdG

Image 2 - GE map in VdG with both gps trails shown

I did some tests with your Plum Canyon walk and will show you the results for tomorrow. I don't have your gps file to test out the route so I created one in VdG.

Expletives deleted! This is the third time in the last few days that I've replied to a post at night on my iPad, apparently successfully, only to find no trace of it here the following morning . Anyone else seen similar?

Anyway, thanks a lot for your detailed response to my two questions, John. Bottom line summary of my post was that I'm not going to get VdG. I'll continue using my existing tools, including TRA, now that I've discovered its GPX facility.

Hi Terry,

I have had similar problems with replying to posts late at night using my BB Playbook. Usually the posts are fine, but I have done several that just disappeared. I even did one twice one night because I thought that I had pressed cancel instead of send. Once maybe, but twice in a row? No. Strange.

I can understand you wanting to stay with TRA, especially if you have GPS coordinates to import and if the images from OpenStreetMap are acceptable to you. However, for cases where the countryside is mountainous, as in your California route, it would be more fun to have something better. Or if you want more whistles and bells.

In my case, I have no GPS history, but I will in the future. Most of my trips are long, by car or plane to far off locations around the world (still to be documented), not walking routes, and VdG is more suitable for these, IMHO.

I looked again at my walk in Angel Woods to see how far off I was between the Google imported map with the GPS route, and VdG with the same imported route. I am off by less than one second. I rounded off to the nearest second when I imported the map, and since one second represents about 31m, this would explain the slight difference between the overlays. This walk within a relatively confined area was only 4.5km long. The width of the line is about 5-10m, so overall, it doesn't really matter.

Just for closure, my future plan when I have GPS coords is to use Google or Here, and create two maps, one showing and one not showing the route. Then I can import the first one into VdG and check the Google route vs the imported VdG route. If an adjustment is required, I can reimport the map slightly moved, check the coordinates and when I am happy, remove the Google map and import the map without the route to the location of the adjusted coordinates.

An alternative is when I have high-relief terrain, I would probably want to bring in the map tilted, in which case the location would be irrelevant and as per my tutorial, except I would note the coordinates to get the overlay at the same location. This is because I would not be able to get the coordinates imported into VdG to match the imported map due to the tilted map. Again I would have 2 identical maps, one with and one without the route. I would then trace the route overtop of the one shown on the tilted map, remove the map showing the route and bring in the one without, and continue on in VdG. And I could do more if I wanted different spectacular viewpoints or if I went over a mountain.

It may sound complicated, but it is not.

Time to get on with the work.

Regards,

Terry,

I received another 25% discount coupon from VdG so I went to look at the site and noticed that there had been 2 patches since I last bothered to look. I looked at the translation of the improvements, and there it was, increased zoom. I installed the latest and sure enough, I could zoom in further. Just had to tell someone. Remember my Angel Woods walk was at max. zoom and the entire route and beyond could be seen. Here is a screen shot of the new max zoom. Also, they fixed up some other annoying problems with smoothness and now it flows.

This new zoom level means that I can place my imported maps at the correct location and zoom in to an excellent level of detail. This will be useful for using GPS data on long walks. Now if they could just fix the coordinates so that the park is not in the lake.......

Morning John,

Pleased to hear you've struck a good deal and now mastering an improved VdG.

I expect to see some superb demos in the weeks ahead, which will no doubt have me reconsidering my recent decision to stick with GE and MEP TRA/KFA!

Hi Terry,

My message was a little unclear. I did not actually buy anything. The message was in German and I noticed that they mentioned a patch to VdG. The patch solved a lot of problems.

I have looked at Heroglyph LE and the travel animation part. You have the Pro version I believe and you should be able to better animate the figures. Did you look at this? The program looks interesting. Not near as good as VdG but seems to be better than TRA, except I presume that it cannot handle GPS.
