Anyone captured a Zoom session?

terrypin ha scritto il 08.07.2020 ore 13:24

Towards the end of a Zoom session with 17 participants last night, I impulsively opened my ageing CamStudio 2.0 and hastily started recording with no time to choose appropriate settings. (This was a virtual wine tasting, but with real wine, and as it was fun I thought I'd show a short video extract to a friend in another attempt to persuade him to join.)

I tried in vain to open the resultant large AVI file in a variety of players and MEPP 2016 & 2017. So before going to bed I loaded it into Movavi and set it to convert to MP4, with my usual default settings. It plays, but with no audio and at 10 fps. A sort of Chaplinesque effect in colour.

I'll naturally experiment further but meanwhile would be interested in recommendations from others who have recorded a Zoom session please.

Hi Terry.

Did you check both audio inputs of your CamStudio 2?

I don't use CamStudio but OBS Studio and set it use NHEVC that gives small files with high quality.

I ask because I have to set levels for my own microphone and have stereo mix enabled to catch the audio from whatever application I'm using.

Checking files it works out to about 2GB per hour (roughly depending on the quality of the original footage) recording at 1080p. The recording is as good as the feed I'm watching.

Hi Ray,

Thanks for the previous post too.

When I get back on the case I expect I’ll find that the CamStudio 2 defaults had somehow become set to 10 FPS, a value I’ve never set myself.

Next time I’ll prepare carefully in advance!

Hi Terry.

It's a heck of a file size for such a low frame rate.

My NHEVC files from OBS studios as as good as I can see on the screen and I used the 60fps option.

Maybe think about switching codecs?

Hi,

I use Corel ScreenCap, the older version. It allows me to capture computer and microphone sound at the same time. The latter doesn't always work on my desktop for some reason, but one or the other works well. I usually capture at 30 fps. I think that this came along with PaintShop Pro Ultimate a couple of versions ago, but I got it with Pinnacle Studio U.

The new version has 2 variants. The one that I have but haven't used allows me to capture the screen and webcam.

Terry, if you are the Zoom host, then you can record the session. Did you try that? Works fine here, albeit the sound is slightly off sync.

Hi Ray,

Yes, it was indeed a strange file altogether!

Opening CamStudio 2.0 I see in Options that 'Do not record audio' is set. Unchecking that and instead selecting 'Record audio from speakers' fails with the obscure message 'WaveoutGetSelectControl() failed.'

Looking at Video Option, the only codecs offered are:

Logitech Video (I420)
Intel IYUV codec
Microsoft Video 1
Microsoft Windows Media Video 9
Xvid MPEG-4 Codec
lnteI lndeo® Video 4.5

Hi Terry. You need to make sure (if you are using the inboard sound module (( RealTec?)) ) that you have Stereo mix enabled as well as your microphone. Default device though should be the Stereo Mix.

You can set other parameter up while you are there. They do not interfere with MEPs settings. Mine are set for high quality playback if the app or sound control allows it.

.

I like OBS Studio. It's free, does a great job, easily records either screen, Can stream to most platforms if needed. Easy to set up. Great quality output and doesn't use the same resources as MEP. It might interfere with VPX as I'm using the NVHEC for output recording. There may be things it can't do that you need but may be worth looking at.

I've just used it in another thread in my last reply about portrait exporting to record MEP.

Ray.

Thanks Ray, yes, Stereo Mix was what was needed. Many months since I last used CamStudio. So not only have its settings apparently been changed from the careful configuration I arrived at (probably years ago), but I’ve had to re-read my old notes about them.

OBS looks interesting.

@browj2

I’ll try a Zoom solo host session for starters. (I’m already talking to myself a fair bit anyway!)

Hi Terry.

The last few Windows updates have reset most of the basic audio settings to their default settings.

Win 10 seems to prefer making the microphone the default device.

I've had to reset audio preferences at least twice since running Win 10.

It has interfered with a few of my programs settings. It's a pain.

Agreed. But I'm confident that the handwritten letter I've just posted to Bill Gates will fix this.

BTW, what's your current Win 10 version? Mine is 1909 Build 18363-900, with a reassurance that is up to date.

@CubeAce

Hi Ray,

Yes, mine is Win 10 Pro.

After installing OBS, frankly my initial impression was rather negative. Starting with its complex and crowded main screen dominated by animated videos as seen through ‘infinite mirrors’. What’s that in aid of?

I used the Auto Wizard to set preferences for recording only, and then attempted in vain to work out how to start a video recording of my desktop., starting with tentatively populating the Sources and Scenes.

Then suddenly what appeared to be a radio chat broadcast started! No obvious trigger on my part, nor any source in either OBS or my browser. Closing the latter stopped the uninvited audio, although none of my browser tabs had been highlighted as active.

Bottom line: a long way short of a one-click video recording app like Camtasia!

Maybe its strength is for streaming?

Hi Terry,

The other one that I have used in the past but gave up when it started asking me to pay is Debut from NCH. Go to the link and you'll be offered the free version. Try it out. It has a lot of features.

Hi John,

Thanks, looks good. Duly installed and quickly recorded my first video. So far no nags or 'locked' features.

Hi Terry

Check the loading on your CPU/GPU with OBS - I find it very heavy compared to some other screen recorders.

I use ScreenCast-o-Matic, paid for, 2 click screen recording, easy to set up and low on resource usage

Debut is also good.

Hi Terry.

You had set OBS Studio to capture the screen the application was on, hence the infinity screen.

One screen is supposed to show what you are capturing and the other screen the recording.

All you had to do was select the screen you wanted to record in the Sources box. The scene box doesn't need anything added to it.

Not sure what you did with the audio.

I'll admit I didn't use the wizard but set it up manually.

Thanks a bunch Ray, that will be very useful.

So you made no entries in the two sections Scenes and Sources? OBS refers to these as the “bread & butter of OBS”, so I assumed I would need to use them before I got anywhere, but plainly not.

Hi Terry.

I just use it for screen capture.

Apart from setting up the type of file you want to record and which monitor you want to record, and audio settings, there is little to do. I haven't tried to do a live broadcast and doubt I ever will. I left those parts as they were when I opened the program.

The reason I like it is it doesn't seem to impact the performance of the other programs I use and so far it has matched the quality of anything I've used as a source.

Ray.

Hi Terry,

I use Vegas Pro and Vegas Movie Studio, but also have Sound Forge Audio Studio, Acid Music Studio (just purchased ver. 11 actually), Xara Graphics Pro 17, and Music Maker Premium 2019 (not updating to 2020 - yet): so I do follow the Forum Posts here as well.

By Nick Hope on the Vegas Pro Forum on Using OBS. The settings may be from an older version of OBS, but they are similar to what Ray posted above.

Also, if you "peruse" through YouTube, you may want to check out EposVox. He has an extensive OBS Master Class, and I believe he also has a PDF that you can follow along with for the various episodes.

Hope this helps with your endeavors for that Zoom Training!
