Hi Mike,

Thanks, appreciate that helpful information, particularly on OBS, which deserves more study than I gave it. In practice though, I reckon my image and video capturing requirements are probably well met by the several programs I already use. It’s usually curiosity that motivates yet another download!

Hi Terry

Check the loading on your CPU/GPU with OBS - I find it very heavy compared to some other screen recorders.

I use ScreenCast-o-Matic, paid for, 2 click screen recording, easy to set up and low on resource usage

Debut is also good.

Hi John.

Thanks. For video captures I'm currently using Snagit, CamStudio 2.0, and - simplest of all - Game Bar. And may add Debut to the list. Possibly also OBS, largely out of curiosity rather than a genuine need.

Hi Terry.

I tried to copy John into this reply as well but the option isn't available on this reply.

Using OBS to record and allowing it to use the NVENC hardware encoding It has little impact on the performance on other programs running on my machine. In fact I can't find a difference.

I'm wondering how John had OBS Studio set up.

I've uploaded a video showing the impact using browsers and MEP. The clip a bit slow and messy because it's unedited. Please excuse the pauses while I decide what to do next in each bit.

I also made jpg of the resources after stopping recording.

I've never been able to get game bar to work for normal screen capture to my satisfaction. How do you find it?

Ray.

Hi Ray,

I don't think it's intended for normal screen capture. I've only used it for video recording, typically in a browser or Google Earth. For years I used FRAPS for GE work and still do occasionally.

As I expect you've found, Game Bar records only the application that was active when you started it. So for example your browser will display each tab you open, plus pop-ups etc, and your spoken comments or background. But AFAIK not the mouse cursor. Similarly, your typing in Notepad will be recorded. But as soon as you close the app (or change its size), the recording ends.

Hi Terry.

Yes, the game bar was the first thing I tried and then the next thing I tried to uninstall 😆. Which bye the way, you can't. I was surprised how many of the apps in Windows you can't uninstall. One reason I don't keep a camera or microphone constantly connected to my PC. I absolutely hate most operating systems now that should just do the job of letting me use the apps I want to use. Now I'm hearing BMW is thinking about putting extras in their cars you would need to subscribe to to use. How mad is that? An extra built into a car during production that you have no access to unless you pay monthly for it. (I also now hate Elon Musk as he started it 😏).
