Avoid 'Calculating graphics data...' when loading existing project?

discburn wrote on 7/23/2018, 11:08 AM

I'm still on Video Pro X6, even though I have X10, because X6 plays back with less choppiness.

Recently, I bought a Sony PXW-Z150 and recorded in Mpeg2 HD 1080p25. The file extension is .MXF.

Starting a new project in VPX6, I choose PAL 1080i25 as my timeline, since no PAL 1080p25 exists. I drag the .MXF file onto the timeline and work away (I'll be exporting in 25p, so I'm just ignoring the interlaced term for the timeline). All well.

Now, every time I open the project, a dialogue box says 'Loading 92%' and at bottom of page 'Calculating graphics data...' The video is an hour long, so it takes about 3 minutes for the calculating to complete. Then the timeline fills up.

Anybody know how to avoid this calculating at the start of opening my project. I must add that this does not happen if I open the project in VPX10. It opens immediately.

Here's a screenshot of Media Info for the clip. There's actually more data in the Media Info for other audio channels and time code, but I didn't bother screenshotting that.

Thanks in advance,

Seamus

Hi

. . . . 'Calculating graphics data...' The video is an hour long, so it takes about 3 minutes for the calculating to complete. . . . .

Talk about a coincidence I have just been fixing a 'similar' issue with VPX 10 which could be related.

I do not think this a movie clip issue, I suspect the 'preview icons' you see on the timeline cache being rebuilt and/or not being saved correctly each time VPX 6 loads/unloads the project, whereas VPX 10 is working correctly.

The cache file you are looking for, should be in the root of the project folder and is called mxfilerelatedcache.mxc2

Try moving or deleting it and then load the project into VPX 6 and let it recreate the cache file. Hopefully next time you load the project it should load quickly.

As you are creating an interlaced project for progressive material it might be worth checking that "Automatic Interlace" setting is deselected in the "Video/Audio" tab of "Program settings as I have found in the past that this can create a playback performance hit. Also I would probably find a project preset with a progressive option and then just change the FPS rate in the "Movie Settings" to 25.

Try deselecting "Overload optimisation" in the "Program settings >Playback tab" for smoother preview if you have a powerful computer as this is sometimes checked by default.

@johnebaker

Thanks for the tip. I suspect that might have helped me on my last project that took a long time to load and I think this may have been because I removed a lot of clips to shorten the project, after the initial loading.

@discburn, @Scenestealer

Hi

Just for completeness - the problem I was having with VPX 10 was in a particular projects media pool for the videos, I was not getting any image icons of the video clips, only the generic video clip icon.

There may be several mxfilerelatedcache.mxc2 files located in a project, in my case it was the one in the source video folder that was causing the issue. Deleting this and re-opening the project recreated the file and the image icons appeared.

@johnebaker

Yes, I found a 'mxfilerelatedcache.mxc2' in the project folder, and another in my video folder, where I had the clip. I deleted both, renamed the project, reimported the clip. The audio generated its graphic data to create the waveform. Problem solved. Project opens up fast now.

@Scenestealer

Thanks, Peter. I unchecked all 'interlacing' options and the 'optimisation' option. Then actually pressed 'E', selected Full HD 1080p24, changed the 24 to 25 and my interlaced timeline changed to progressive without a hitch.

All good results today!!
