Exiting MEP with the 'x' icon sometimes fails

terrypin wrote on 2/3/2017, 3:45 AM

I raised this in the 'HDR' thread a couple of days ago. For a couple of my recent projects, when I attempt to close MEP 2016 Premium by my usual method using the top right 'x' icon, it fails. Instead it empties all sections of the MEP window and waits.

Clicking 'x' again produces the familiar message:

So I click Don't save and all is well.

Strangely, using the alternative File > Exit method proceeds as normal, i.e. immediately closing MEP.

Anyone seen similar, or have any suggestions as to likely cause please?

Hi Terry

I have had this problem which I narrowed down to the process MagixOfaHelper-Module not shutting down and is related to the News Window as follows:

- the News window is either not opening and closing as it should if it is set to be displayed

or

- the 'Hide news' setting is being ignored if set to be hidden.

In either case, ensure MEP is totally shut down - check in Task Manager that the above background process has closed - if not kill it.

Start MEP and enable or disable Hide news in the program settings, ie set it opposite to the current setting.

Close MEP, check again it has totally shut down in Task Manger

Restart MEP and then put the setting back to its original value.

Close and restart MEP - all should be well.

Hi John,

Thanks, but didn't work here.

First time I restarted MEP it was unresponsive to all operations and had to close using TM.

Next restart was OK, but after loading the project in question and clicking 'x' it still displayed that intermediate largely empty screen. Guess I'll just get into the habit of using File > Exit.

I'll try it again later, and try leaving Hide News checkmarked. (Original state was no checkmark, i.e. show news. and that's what it is now.)

It seems to be some sort of weird corruption in one particular project. And the behaviour has now changed. After exiting (by any method) MEP 2016 closes normally (i.e. no intermediate 'empty' project), but it then restarts automatically! Just as if I'd launched it manually. That's a new one to me.

Hi Terry

I occasionally get this as well with all versions of MEP from 17 to Premium (2017) - let the restart complete then close MEP. It should then stay closed and close correctly - until the next time it decides to do a restart 😠.

Thanks John. Strange. Never happened to me in any version,11-2017! Most of that was under XP. Is it a known bug?

Hi

. . . . Is it a known bug? . . . .

I do not think so - I suspect it may be an intermittent issue with Windows 10 as I used to have an issue with Outlook showing the same behaviour.

The problem is it is not reproducible and may happen randomly with no consistency on when it will occur again.

Hi,

I occasionally have the same problem with both MEP2016 and VPX. Yesterday, I had both still loaded as Background Processes after exiting them. They have to be killed before re-opening. Like John EB, I cannot reproduce this, it just happens.

Yes, I have Movie Pro Edit 2013 and I have the same problem. It will not shut down unless I use the Task bar.

What a pain.

My version currently turns on whenever it feels like it and doesn't like being told to shut down. If I push an empty DVD in it even tries to play it. I had to remove the 2020 update and go back as it wouldn't even play video only audio. The guidance from Magix didn't work. And...... I do wish they'd stop moving folders about and deleting older material when upgrading. The Samplitude stuff is excellent but............... very annoying when removing VSTs.

@mikelockey

Hi Mike

Please do not resurrect old topics, this one is over 3 years old and refers to an older version of MEP.

. . . . I do wish they'd stop moving folders about and deleting older material when upgrading. . . . .

It can be confusing, however it was an overdue necessity, particularly for effect VSTs.

By moving, older VSTs in particular, to a common location means they have to be installed once, and can be shared with different Magix programs eg audio effect VST's program can be used both by MEP, Music Maker etc.

Please create a new topic on the DVD issue and include the response from Magix we may be able to help.

I will close this topic.
