MEP v MediaInfo frame rate disagreement

terrypin wrote on 9/21/2019, 3:50 AM

MediaInfo (and Apple documentation) say my iPhone 6S+ produces MOV files at 59.94 fps, but MEPP reports it as 60 fps in Properties.

Just as I groan at prices like '£59.99', I'd be happier using 60 fps, but I fret about the obscure implications. Which is the preferred number to use in project settings, assuming export of the final movie will be mainly for a UK (PAL) HD TV?

Actually MediaInfo is saying it is a variable framerate with a max of 60.000, a minimum of 54.545. 59.940 probably represents the average. So take your pick.

Anyone here using IPhone/iPad (or any device creating 59.94 fps output) with feedback on my question please?

Meanwhile I’m using 59.94 and AFAICS the only downside is the redundant error message every time I save a still image.

Hi Terry

As @ericlnz has pointed out the issue is the video is variable framerate see the Frame rate mode line in your MediaInfo image.

MEP works best with Constant framerate, variable will give many different values in MEP depending on the range of variation.

IMHO you should convert the video to Constant Bitrate to avoid potential issues in MEP and when exporting.

Hi John,

Thanks, but I don't relish converting a couple of hundred MOV movie clips for a typical project.

I'll see how 59.94 works out. As I said, no other obvious negative consequences seen so far apart from the one I've described.

Do you still have MovAvi for batch conversion?

Hi John,

Yes, and in a spirit of experiment I tried it a little earlier, successfully converting my 59.94 to 60. Still a chore though on a large scale. I might also try Handbrake, which I see has a 'folder' option.

But I've cheerfully been using these MOVs and the other mixed video sources for a few years, with project settings at 25 fps (or, for a while 50), with no serious problems. So 25, 50, 59.94 - all seem usable without the pain of conversion. I have yet to test export results properly though.

Still hoping there might be another iPhone user to share practical experiences.

P.S Trust your Cornwall video material is coming along nicely?

Although MovAvi does not have the folder option there is a quick way

  1. click the add video button
  2. browse to the folder
  3. select the first video
  4. press Ctrl+A to select all
  5. click open

MovAvi will then load all the files from that folder.

Personally I do not like Handbrake.

OT: Very wet and windy today - got some video of 4 kite-boarders this afternoon, however visibilty is poor - too much sea spray.

Why do you want to convert it to 60fps? 59.94 is the correct NTSC FR for 60p.

Media info is in my opinion reporting the correct target FR for your phone material, not the average as stated by ericinz.

The converting process is just to get rid of the wavering frame rate so that magix can report and process 59.94 correctly.
