  The version I am using is movie edit pro mx plus. Not sure of the version number Video formats are all avi off of the same camera Project settings haven't been altered since install And as far as my computer, I've edited countless videos

  Thanks, johnebaker.  That is probably what has happened.  I was digitising my CD collection so I did not close down the application after conversion to MP3.  That sounds like a deficiency in the software. I'll try and confirm your theory tomorrow

  Thanks for your responses.  I had originally tried to break my project by using the "split movie" command.  It deleted the entire project.  I had never turned off any automatic backup feature, but there were no files listed with the .BAKO.MV

  Went  to  the   Sony  website  and the  say  it   should   be  compatible  with  Win 8.  they  have  a  seperate  software  that  I  can  download. I will  down  tonight  and  let   you know  if this  solves  the problem.
