Why does Movie edit Pro create random unwanted .WAV files when importing .MTS files.

Wiping an audio track

In my Movie Edit Pro 17 Plus, the "Soundtrack Maker" is under the drop down menu "Edit", then in the "Wizards" section. I can also access it by pressing "W" on the keyboard.

No sound track when AVI imported but OK with MOV format!
When I import in AVI format the soundtrack is completely missing when I use Pro 15, so I have to convert it into MOV to get the sound track. This is most peculiar and I don't understand why. Could it be that I need a particular Codec, if so then

Imported Video has distorted soundtrack in Movie edit Pro 17 Plus HD
When I import DV as an AVI file I get terrible audio. There is a very loud humming. What little I can make out of the original audio is playing very slowly. I can play the video and hear the audio fine in other applications such as Windows Media
