  However of you close the Object trimmer and then click on one of the fade handles on the clip - they do not have to be moved - the buttons then start working when you re-open the Object trimmer. I couldn't completely figure out how I got it to work

  Clicking the left button for Fade In time in the object trimmer did the trick. I had to select Show Audio and Video on One Track (not split) before the button would work. Thanks!
