25P to 24P Conversion using Time Stretch/Resample quality....

Hey everyone  I have two older model Panasonic camera's (HDC-HS300 & HDC-SD100),
both shoot in Full HD 1920x1080, 50i (read somewhere the footage is in a 'wrapper' which unfolds into Progressive on playback/editing) but have the 25p Film Mode feature, which I obvisiouly would prefer given that it is native progressive. When it comes to shooting my projects for blu-ray 24p, will the time stretch function give me the best results for 25p to 24p conversion in the timeline, or is there a better way of achieveing optimum results?

Cheers!

Hi

The timestretch function will slow down the video, it will not give you a change of framerate (fps).

To change the fps you set this in the export or burn settings in MEP.

There are some downsides to doing this:-

  1. An issue which can be difficult to overcome is the effect of Pulldown - a standard technique for changing fps - this can introduce jerkiness into the video, particularly at certain panning speeds / direction and where there are objects moving across the screen.

  2. Similarly conversion from Interlace to Progressive or vice versa can have an effect on the quality of the video.

  3. With 50i converting to 25p this should not be noticeable, however converting to 24p may cause issues.

For best results it is better to shoot in the format / aspect ratio / framerate, that will be used in your final end product, at the highest bitrates permitted by the recording device.  This will maintain maximum quality and avoid introducing potential issues as I have described above.

In your case s you already have the recorded material I think you are going to have to do a lot of testing to determine what are the best settings - the one I can advise you to keep as high as possible is the bitrate.

Hi John mate,
many thanks for the reply and help. Luckily I have yet to have any footage to work with, it's for a music/drum blu-ray project I have planned, as well as any Movies I shoot in near future, which I hoped to film in 24P.
I think I will try pulldown in export settings for MPEG4, although I do question the advanced tab, as it seems quite buggy/non responsive to your desired selections(s) upon clicking on apply/ok.
So basically if I stick to the export/puldown route, I just edit project as normal as a 25P project, then just render it as 24P? Thanks again,

Best regards,

Dan.
