Can Magix Movie Edit Pro 2016 import and process 4k video clips. At first every time I tried to import one it crashed. I then tried ticking " Automatically create proxy files" at the start of the project creation, and it does now import them, but still crashes after a few seconds. Any ideas please?

I think it could be one of two possibilities.
The most obvious one is most people get their 4K video clips from their phones rather than a dedicated camcorder. Such files are often recorded at a variable frame rate that video editing packages don't like.
The second is the computer in use doesn't have the grunt to cope with the files because one or more components within the machine is below the minimum spec needed to process such demanding files which are literally four times more demanding to process than HD files.
My bet would be on the first problem. That the file is recorded from a smart phone although the same can happen from a Go-Pro camera. If possible the product producing the files should be set to record at a constant frame rate, or the files need converting to a constant frame rate using Handbrake.
To see if the files in question are variable frame rate, download MediaInfo and look at the text view and look at the data from the files.

Many thanks for your quick and detailed reply. Computer is a recent Windows 10 64 Bit, machine with Pentium Silver J5005 , (4 core , 4 thread) processor running at 1.5GHz to 2.8GHz with Turbo Boost and 8 G RAN with 1TB hard drive. Video clips were shot on a Toguard H100 Trail Camera. I'll take a look at Handbrake and MediaInfo so thanks for those suggestions. I may have to just reset trail camera to take at lower 1080 resolution if all else fails. Many thanks again.

I could only find this out about Intel UHD Graphics 605 which your Pentium CPU has.
It could be it doesn't have enough grunt even though it is a 2017 mobile processor and maybe meant for for web browsing more than for editing. I find the publicity blurb as confusing as most advertising publicity is, so I'm not completely sure and the variable frame rate aspect of the files could still be the main problem.
Certainly it is not an old processor but looks like it was meant for a tablet or similar due to its small current consumption.

Many thanks for taking all that trouble Ray. Disappointing from HP if they provided me with a graphics card that can not match the spec of the processor and RAM!!! I'll try the variable frame rate option.

The graphics processor is a part of the CPU, not separate. Also although 8 GB of ram is specified for the program, most of us here would be using at least 16GB for thinking about editing 4K footage so could be another possibility but best to explore the other two possibilities first. Wish I could find out more about the GPU. Have you looked to see if there are any updated drivers for it? Have you got the Intel driver update support assistant on your machine?
Machine suppliers seldom understand the needs of video editing and best to use support forums for advice.

Thanks Ray. Yes I realised, after I sent the previous message, that graphics processor is part of CPU. I don't think it's a pc limitation issue though, as I can import those 4K clips into Microsoft HD Movie Maker pro without any problem. It's just that it's not as good an editing suite as the Magix which I am very familiar with. Will investigate the frame rate option as I think you're right about that.

We need the Mediainfo data on one of the video clips - see this tutorial on setting up, and using MediaInfo once it is installed.

I think it must be an HP Chromebook as they are the only things I can see on the HP website that are running / have run, Pentium processors. None have had a secondary graphics card that I can find.

Microsoft Movie Maker is a lightweight video editor with limited features and capabilities compared to MEP 2016 which imports 4K video on my PC with no issues.
Is the computer a HP All-in-One PC like this one?

If it is the one that John has linked, to what extent, if any, would the fact that the monitor is HD, rather than UHD, have any bearing on this problem? (Just curious! I have a Full HD monitor and have never tried using 4k (or higher) footage so would really like to know.)

As far as the monitor goes, playback of 4K UHD is 'downscaled' to FullHD in the GPU, and it does look 'sharper' than FullHD.
The iGPU does support 4K UHD and Direct X 12.1 which is installed with Windows 10, so, as has been suggested, the drivers may need updating.
It is worth noting that the UHD 605 is a light usage GPU ie gaming or video editing may struggle on it.

Like you I'm only running HD monitors but do record at 4K and export 4K projects. As long as the hardware doing the encoding is up to it there are no problems beyond not seeing the actual finished files (or the that matter the original files) in their full 4K glory.
I do see a better quality export on the monitor which was unexpected and sometimes moire can be a problem when viewing due to a lack of resolution. I also don't get the benefit of seeing any HDR due to monitor deficiencies and doubt I could really accurately adjust for it anyway with the monitors capabilities. I even tried up-scaling 4K to 8K just to see if the system would cope, which it did, all be it very slow to export.
At some point my monitors will probably die and be replaced with 4K versions which now are now about the same price I paid for my HD ones.

Hi @johnebaker - Checked in Display Adapters and only the UHD 605 is shown. Yes that's the pc that you have identified. Thanks for your help all. Tried again and it crashes every time no matter what settings I use when I set the video project up.

You could still use the video clips if you convert them with Handbrake to 1080p (HD) but do also check for frame rate problems. Another thing you could try is un-ticking the 'use hardware acceleration where possible' boxes for both playback and export in the program settings if you still want to try using 4K footage but only after converting any variable frame rate video to constant frame rate. It may work but be extremely slow to render or cause playback stuttering without the use of proxy files.
