Adjusting True Black & White Color

CarpentersMate wrote on 4/5/2019, 9:07 PM

Hi Gang

I'm using Edit Pro 15 and working with old black and white newsreel footage. Was looking for a possible 'Color Preset' that would adjust/switch to TRUE black and white. Other than saturation and a few other features I don't see the same or similar option in Final Cut Pro that would allow you to take out the aged 'off color' of old Black and White footage that sometimes occurs. Perhaps there's another way to accomplish this?

Thank You

Hi

AFAICR with version 15 you only have Brightness, Contrast and Saturation available for what you need.

Desaturate first and then tweak the brightness and contrast.

If you are using scanned images , and have an imaging editing program, eg Photoshop, PaintShop Pro or GIMP

then these would probably do a better job then MEP.

. . . . I don't see the same or similar option in Final Cut Pro . . . .

Unfortunately cannot answer for this program, it is not a program I have used for a very long time.

Hi again johne - nice to see you. Yes I was afraid of that. I thought using the color filters might help? This is old archival 'footage' as I indicated not still images. Can you tell me how many versions of Edit Pro came after 15? Thanks johne ...

Hi,

Just to avoid all confusion, please refer to the program as Movie Edit Pro, or MEP, followed by the version and either basic, Plus or Premium, and not just Edit Pro 15, which could also mean Vegas Pro Edit 15, a recent Magix program. As John EB mentioned, MEP 15 (basic?) is very old. Since then, there has been something like 16, 17 or MX, 2014, 2015, 2016, 2017, 2018 and the present 2019 with the version number of 18.0.2.235.

We are assuming that you mean Movie Edit Pro and not Vegas Pro Edit. Is this correct?

You can see all of the features of the current program on the Magix.com web site.

Hi

There are a number of ways you could try depending on what you are trying to correct:-

If you are trying to remove a colour cast the use the dropper tool in Effects>Colour>White Balance and click on an area of the image in the Preview window that is supposed to be white or grey.

In the same Colour window use the Auto Colour button. This will also have the effect of adjusting the contrast of the brightest white to 100% and the darkest black to 0%. If you do not need to remove a colour cast and just want to adjust the image to a the full contrast range then you can use the Auto Exposure button in the Brightness/Contrast Effects window.

If you have the New Blue FX Colourfast plugin that came with some of the earlier versions of MEP open that and choose the B&W preset.

Thank You Scenestealer - Those are very good tips!

Do you know where I can find the 'New Blue FX Colourfast' plugin?

Thanks again!
