Analogic recording stops continuously and regularly after some seconds

esaollikainen wrote on 10/30/2020, 11:19 AM

Hi,

I am using MovieEdit Pro 2016 Premium (15.0.0.(UDP3). I installed it just some weeks ago and at the same time I had to instal the driver for the red Magix - connector. Because I earlier used Magix Movies on DVD7.

When I record VHS-video, the recording stops regularly, not for a longer time but just for a little moment. So that these stops can be seen harmfully in the final recording and in the exported movie.

My PC is AsusN5 Inte(R) Corel i3 2,27 GHz Ram 4 Gb, 64 bit. Already 10 years old - so is it too slow ?

Quite possibly, yes! Your processor is, by today's standards, "slow", and the amount of RAM you have is really the absolute minimum. The "interruptions" you are seeing in the digitised video are a clear indication that your computer is struggling to keep up with the throughput of data that the conversion process is creating.

It could poor quality video tape, which causes your capture device to hiccup, thinking there is no video signal. A couple of things to look at:

- Does it occur with other tapes? If not, it indicates that that tape is dodgy. If it does, then it could be the VCR; try another VCR if you can get one. Unfortunately, the hardware plays a big part in the success of VHS captures. The quality of the capture device and particularly the lack of a Time Base Corrector to smooth out/steady the VHS signal coming from the VCR play a big part in achieving a good recording.

- If your computer simply can't hack the pace, it will probably be "dropping frames", which means it is not recording the video temporarily because it can't keep up. Although this shouldn't result in a complete break in recording, only a audio out of sync condition. You can see how the CPU is coping during recording by watching the Dropped Frames and CPU display, bottom right of the Analog Recording screen.

If you find your CPU is struggling eg very high CPU use and dropped frames, try using the MXV format for recording, and progressively lower the quality: start off with DVD Quality and go back to S-VHS and VHS if need be. You can also adjust the quality level using the slider on the Configuration button.

My struggle is over! I built my (now) system 2 in 2011 when DV was king and MPEG 2 was just coming onto the scene and I needed a more powerful system to cope. Since then we've advanced to MP4 and to bigger and bigger resolutions. I was really suffering, not so much in editing (with proxies) but in encoding, which just took ages. A video, with Neat Video noise reduction applied, would encode at 12% of film speed. My new system 1 does the same job at 160% of film speed. Marvellous. I'm keeping my old system as a capture station for analogue video tapes and DV.

Thank you for good advices ! It is obvious that I have to update my PC. because CPU is running occasionally 100%. I tried also those other actions but they did not help. But anyway this Corona epidemia gives good time for editing old VHS videos.
