Another audio problem .. Audio cleaning not working

Kami_1 wrote on 7/13/2017, 8:59 PM

MEP 2016 Premium (V. 15). I import video with sound, and have video and audio on separate tracks. I hadn't used MEP for about a month. No computer changes. (Windows 7, i7-5930K processor, 24GB Ram, audio on motherboard).

Problems occur when editing both HD and Standard videos.

The first thing I noticed is that none of the saved audio .afx fixes I created work, even those I created 1 to 4 months ago.

Now I've noticed that after the first use of "Create noise sample" in the Audio Cleaning/Advanced window, I can't change the nose sample. That is, I listen to the first sound, them click on Create Noise Sample. Then I hit "Next" (next sound) and, thinking that's a better sound to use, I click Create Noise Sample again. From this point on, there are no changes in the graph which reflect the audio sound/filter. And this is reflected in the audio itself, in that I can't get rid of the unwanted noise. This happens no matter what option I've selected in this dialog box (e.g., Optimize for Voice).

I've been using MEP for years, and never have had this happen. Is there anything I can do before I reinstall MEP?

After exporting, I'm also experiencing click sounds wherever I've "narrated." Also new.

Added: Just installed the update. No difference with the audio problem.

Hi Kami_1, good to hear from you again.

You write "No computer changes". I assume you mean no hardware changes, but what about software, e.g. Windows Updates, updates to drivers etc.?

My strong suspicionย is that it is your on-board soundcard driver that is "throwing a wobbly". Can you check that you are running the latest version of its driver? If you are, I think I would be tempted to try and reinstall that same driver; doing this sometimes corrects previously faulty installs/updates.

If any/all of the above does not help please post back with more details about your computer, especially the actual make and model of the motherboard and hence the audio.

OTOH, even though you are running the generally very stable (in my experience) Win 7 it is entirely possible that a recent M$ update might be the cause of your problems. In which case I suspect only a total uninstall and reinstall of MEP may resolve the problem but see this tutorial for detailed instructions on how to successfully achieve this. Although written specifically for Win 10, the general guidance is also pertinent to you.

Thanks for the reply. I'll look for driver updates. I don't know the make and model of the motherboard except that it's an HP computer. No hardware changes. I had done one Windows update. After reading your message, I did the current update. I was able to use one of my previous audio "filters," but "Create Noise Sample" always shows the same resulting graphic, that is, it's not working. The only other updates have been CCleaner and Malwarebytes.

I read the Tutorial. It's SO MUCH work and time to do an MEP install/upgrade. I usually upgrade MEP every 2 or 3 years. On closing MEP today, I got this popup ad. Is this brand new or the version released last year? If it's brand new, I think I'd prefer to upgrade than do a re-install which I might want to do anyway. I HOPE they're new, and I'm checking out the different versions.

One other oddity has happened a couple of times just since yesterday. After I stop playing a scene in MEP, the audio continues. One time yesterday, I heard the audio for a few seconds even though I hadn't played anything in MEP. Too bizarre.

There's another oddity in the Audio Cleaning window, and I'm wondering if this is part of the problem.

When I work on an SD video after having done an HD video, I get a popup message in the Audio Cleaning window that tells me this is NOT an HD movie. (I exit the window and go to movie settings, which are correct for video, click on OK, then return to the A/C window.)

I always change the video settings when I go from SD to HD to SD. I even check the video settings in Windows Explorer. BUT I don't do anything with audio settings because I don't know what they should be.

There's no new audio driver. But HP support uninstalled and re-installed this driver. No difference in the Audio Cleaning window.

Hi Kami

. . . click on Create Noise Sample. Then I hit "Next" (next sound) and, thinking that's a better sound to use, I click Create Noise Sample again. From this point on, there are no changes in the graph which reflect the audio sound/filter. . . .

I have found that there must be some very significant change in the noise for the graphs to change by any significant amount.

It just may be that there is not a significant change in noise level to update the graph.

Here is an example which I think you will agree is very noisy (it was a windy day)

and yet when I analyse this clip in MEP 2016, as you can see that the changes to the graph are very small despite the big differences in the noise in the video

Hi John,

In your sample, I both hear a difference and see the difference on the graph. I get absolutely no change in the graph even with totally different audio. The only ones which make a difference are the samples provided, where you click on the down arrow by NoisePrint.

By the way, I love the sound of ocean waves. I would make them a bit softer, but wouldn't "clean" the audio. ๐Ÿ˜€
