auto-preview speed

Patrick-Robert wrote on 3/5/2021, 8:21 PM

Hi, Is there any way to speed up the preview speed for soundfiles. It takes like 2 seconds for a soundfile to start playing. Not really useful to audition a bunch of soundfiles fast. That would be my only request for soundforge if any. Otherwise, it's my fav editor and don't want to change.

Thank you.

p.s. I just tried in vegas pro 18 and it's superfast to audition between audiofiles.

Have you checked the audio device you have selected in (Options/Preferences/Audio (tab)? Is it a separately installed audio interface or something simple like Microsoft Sound Mapper? Assuming that you are referring to Sound Forge Pro 14, I am certainly not experiencing a preview delay with either SFP14 or VP18, and SFP14 is set to Microsoft Sound Mapper.

Experiment with alternate playback buffer settings in the aforementioned "Options/Preferences/Audio" menu,

btw, welcome to the Magix Sound Forge users forum @Patrick-Robert,

@condex Hi. Thanks for the answer. In SFP14, It's on microsoft sound mapper but changing to asio or anything else doesn't change anything. Still the same delay. There's no problem in VP18, it's instantaneous.

@rraud Hi, thanks for the welcome and the suggestion. No, changing the buffer doesn't change anything. It's set 0.20 seconds. Setting it too low just adds crackling. Just to be clear, I am talking about previewing files in the explorer at the bottom. Playing back the files in soundforge using spacebar is not the problem here.

Sorry, I do not know. I experience a delay of no more than a second or two with PCM and MP3 files with auto-play preview in Pro10 and Pro14, I would assume the other SF Pro versions would be about the same. Maybe try a Reset and Cache clear (File menu).

Otherwise there is Magix Sound Forge Tech Support.

I just tried SFP14's explorer window. Double-clicking a .wav track in explorer made it instantly open in SFP's workspace. R clicking on other .wav tracks in the SFP's explorer window and then hitting 'Play Media' in the context window that opens resulted in the tracks being played instantly. Even selecting 'Open Media in Player' resulted in the tracks being played back in Windows Media Player but with a small delay of maybe a tenth of a second.

I have tried the same with mp3's in SF Pro 14 - it plays immediately.

Hello everyone. I'm a bit late for the response. Thank for checking it out. Like I said, I'm talking about the auto-preview of audio files in the explorer at the bottom. Not loading and playing files which is fine. In vegas 18, auto-previewing audio files is instant for me also using the the keyboard arrows from one file to the other but not in Soundforge which is weird since it is probably the same codebase (I assume). There's definitely an issue for me there. it is literally 1-2 seconds delay gap between files. Hopefully this will get resolved in an update. Big thanks for the help though.

Playback in Explorer also starts immediately for me - so an update won't solve the problem - you'll have to look further in your settings.
Is there perhaps a piece of "silence" at the beginning of your files?

@Walter.I Hi, nope no silence at the beginning of the file. I mean I tried it also with ableton live, vegas pro 18 and no prob auditioning files at lightning speed. My PC is really fast with an high-end SSD toshiba drive. That shouldn't be a prob. I didn't touch no soundforge settings related to previewing files. As far as I remembered, it wasn't a prob before but I can't pinpoint when this started to be a prob. Anyways thanks. I'll figure it out.

@Patrick-Robert, I am having the same issue since many versions ago. I have just never used preview in any of the SF Pro browsers because its so slow to play back...about 2 seconds for me. Makes for browsing quickly for files too tedious. Would rather use Reaper preview and just leave it open in the background. So much faster.

I think folks here are confusing, like you mention, preview in a browser vs regular playback when the file is open. It's nothing related to buffers in SF or audio settings. ASIO when in normal playback is instant.

Patrick-Robert wrote on 3/24/2021, 9:11 AM

@Paul-Jinkerson Ok thanks for the info. It seems to be the same prob as me. I'm guessing some might not have this issue and others do. At least this confirms it. It is a deal breaker for me as I need to scroll through files to hear them quickly. I was kind of hoping some Magix employee would chime in but I'm guess the discussion forums are user-driven/supported. Cheers!

Yes, this a users forum. Request Magix Support or email: infoservice@magix.net

@rraud Thanks though for the help. It is appreciated. Cheers!

@Patrick-Robert Please let me know if you hear anything from support. I was debating on opening a ticket myself. Maybe we can both be the squeaky wheel?

Patrick-Robert wrote on 3/24/2021, 11:03 PM

@Paul-Jinkerson Hi! Well I'll definitely gonna e-mail them about it. However, since it doesn't seem to be something everybody his experiencing, I'm thinking it's just gonna go at the bottom of the barrel and not be considered an actual problem.

Paul-Jinkerson wrote on 3/25/2021, 4:22 AM

@rraud did mention he has the same issue...1 to 2 seconds. Although to him, it's not an issue. I guess some folks don't mind that much delay when browsing files. 2 seconds is a lot after hitting play and waiting for it to play, times hundreds of audio files(in my case).

Patrick-Robert wrote on 3/25/2021, 5:05 AM

@Paul-Jinkerson Hi, thing is I also own vegas pro 18 and it's lightning quick when auditioning audiofiles in the explorer. I think I'm gonna do a quick vid showing the differences between the 2 softs for me. It will be much clearer. Cheers.
