AVI (AVC) not played correctly

Christian-Rinke wrote on 1/7/2019, 4:05 AM

Hi,

I have a strange problem with *avi files in MEP (18.0.2.225). I can import them but they are not played correctly - it seems the file starts playing but then guts stuck and keeps replaying the first 10 frames or so in a loop, then it jumps a few seconds forward plays a few frames in a loop, etc. . . .

Just clicking on the file in the Import window and playing it, without importing, yields the same result.
Other players (vlan, Dell player) on the same computer play the *.avi file just fine.

Thanks,
Chris

Hi Christian

My guess is that it has something to do with the Audio Codec ADPCM as this article:- https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/desktop/xaudio2/adpcm-overview mentions looping......

You may need to transcode the AVI in a video converter program and use a different audio codec for the sound.

Thanks for this hint. Is there a way to see which codecs are available/installed in the MEP? and is there a way to update these?

I am asking because VLC media player and DELL media player have no troubles playing my avi files correctly, so it just seem to be a matter of using the appropriate codec.

In the advanced encoder window for the AVI export there will be choices of video and audio compression codecs. If it is not there then MEP can not use them and I know of no way you can add any beyond ones that may be listed as a download option on the MEP sales page at Magix.com.

Codecs in Windows players can not all be accessed by Magix programs due to licensing restrictions. Some may become available in the export templates when you add an encoder like FFmpeg or a Prodad titler program that has an export function.

I am happy to report that I could fix the issue - installing the "K-Lite Codec Pack" did the trick, now the avi plays just fine in Magix.

Glad that you are happy but need to point out to others reading this that experienced users do not recommend installing these all in one packs as they can overwrite system and other codecs or put put them to a lower merit order, causing problems with video editing applications.
