Best recommended settings for Youtube?

Hi,

I've been searching through all the forums and I can't find an answer for this, my apologies if this has been asked a million times.

I have Movie Edit Pro 17 Plus HD and am wanting to export to Youtube in 1080p with good quality i.e. no pixelation. Are there any recommended settings to use without making the size too large?

I've been using as many settings that match the input file (from a Sony Action Cam AS15) as possible i.e. 1920x1080, 29.97, 16:9 and a variable bitrate of around 16,000 (according to Sony)
Under MPEG-4 export I make sure those are entered, then go to Advanced > Advanced Video Settings.

I've attached a screen grab of the last settings I used. At 15,000 the output file, for a 14min video, was 2.4GB which is just too large. Broadband in NZ is terribly slow! 9,000 was too pixelated.

I had some settings a while ago that looked better and were more about 1.5GB but I can't remember what I did as I don't know what all the settings mean.
I understand about bitrate, variable or constant etc but I wonder about the AVC preset, Profile, Level etc

Thanks for any info!

Hi,

"I've been searching through all the forums..."

Typing 'YouTube' into the Search box on the right delivers many relevant hits, most of which include this link to YouTube's recommended file settings:

Thanks Terry.

I found that page long ago but it doesn't really tell me much about what the settings inside MME actually do and how adjusting them will affect the output.

When I used to Divx my movie collection, we could get a movie looking almost as good as the orginal but at a fraction of the size i.e a 2hr movie would be great looking at about 6-700 meg.

The movies I make are a max of 14 mins yet the last one I compressed (.264 MP4) was 2.4 GIG!

Something's not right there ...

Hi,

If you've followed the instructions on that page I can't think of a reason for your problem.

Are you uploading directly from your account on the YT site (recommended) rather than using File > Internet > YouTube/Vimeo/Facebook (which I've sometimes had problems with)?

It's a while since I use MEP 17. But I recall getting satisfactory results in uploading 1080p MP4s to YT. Here are a few relevant setings you can try:

Failing that, upload a small file that demonstrates the size problem and I'll try it.

Thanks Terry, I'll try those settings out. I think mine are not far off but I've often found one small tweak can make a huge difference.

I notice your Max GOP Length is 18. Mine's set to 30 by default, I've been reading a little about that to try to figure out what the hell it actually is :) Seems like having it about half of the frame rate is the general concensus so will redo my test clip with those settings. So far I've found that anything with a bitrate under 10,000 looks too grainy.

Could it have something to do with the camera's bitrate? It records at 16,000 apparently so I guess I should export close to that, but then I get the massive files.

Hmm

Thanks for your suggestions so far, I really appreciate it :)
