Blank spaces in my movie

Gregory-Richardson wrote on 2/4/2022, 4:15 PM

I’m using Movie Edit Pro Plus and there’s a lot of blank spaces between my clips. Instead of adjusting them one by one (cause there’s a lot that look that this), is there a way to fix all of the blank spaces at once? I right clicked and used the “find and close gaps” option but that didn’t work.

@Gregory-Richardson Yeah, it's your footage not the program, it's because the last frame isn't a full frame, you'll have to drag the end back to the last full frame then choose Close gaps or drag the event to close it, sorry unless someone knows an automated way when you import so that it doesn't do that.

It's not just you tho, I have one here & have had this issue for yrs, It's to do with the GOP structure of the actual clip i think, every frame is subdivided into other small bits of info, basically a start-middle-& end,

Alt+Q or Alt+W to go to next & previous object ,

& U to delete the end of an event, Z to delete the beginning of an event & T to cut/split are useful keyboard shortcuts, once you have cleaned up these ragged ends you won't have to do it again.

I personally have never seen a frame in MEP fail to go to a full frame mark. Odd.

It's a bit hard to see in this pic but every one with a long number is an unedited clip from my phone, there's 3 at the top created with MEP or Vegas, i can't remember but i've had to deal with this long before i got Vegas,

@Gregory-Richardson

I've seen this in the past. The only way I know is to trim off the "end" of the object/clip, that is the right end: put the Play marker on the last full frame position then hit U. That will cut off the part-frame (it actually makes a cut, then deletes the portion to the right).

In your first image, with the Play marker on the 26:04 frame, simply hit U and the partial bit to the right will be removed. As far as closing up the gap goes, try putting the Play marker into "Mouse mode for single track" (keyboard shortcut 8 or click on the icon below the Preview monitor) before hitting U and it might close up the gap. It certainly does this when removing full frames.

Alternatively, once you have removed the partial frame bits, "Close up the gaps" might work.

I believe VPX can operate with partial frames.

My struggle is over! I built my (now) system 2 in 2011 when DV was king and MPEG 2 was just coming onto the scene and I needed a more powerful system to cope. Since then we've advanced to MP4 and to bigger and bigger resolutions. I was really suffering, not so much in editing (with proxies) but in encoding, which just took ages. A video, with Neat Video noise reduction applied, would encode at 12% of film speed. My new system 1 does the same job at 160% of film speed. Marvellous. I'm keeping my old system as a capture station for analogue video tapes and DV.

I used to think it had something to do with Frame rate, 29,97 vs 30fps, but you can see the bottom 2 are apparently 30fps 🤷‍♂️ (They're not tho according to MEP if you right click Properties it says 29.97)

CubeAce wrote on 2/4/2022, 6:22 PM

@Former user @AAProds @Gregory-Richardson

Hi Gid.

I think you have the explanation.

I opened a project set to 29.97fps and imported the correct frame rate files.

I then changed the movie settings to 30fps but didn't allow any of the program prompts to make any further changes.

This was the result seen in the editor.

That explains why I have never seen this.

Thanks for your insight..

Ray.

@CubeAce Interesting, I'm not sure what to think, it'll prob take some experimenting, My phone says 30fps & from the few i've tried, setting the movie to 30fps fits the files better, we'll see,

This is the same as above Movie 29,97fps

this is the same but i changed to 30fps, the top 2 track files say in the windows folder 29.97fps, the bottom two 30fps,

It looks better so i'll keep 30fps as default,

Hi All

I have seen this when adjusting a clip's speed and setting a fractional value in the spin box. It could be related to the the frame grid in the timeline so it might be worth trying a "Create Frame table New" from the "File" menu.

Hi

. . . . The only way I know is to trim off the "end" of the object/clip, that is the right end: put the Play marker on the last full frame position then hit U. . . . .

MEP and VPX can auto trim clips on import - Program settings, Video/Audio tab - Crop video options bottom right - I used to use this for a video camera that always added a black frame to the start of a clip.

@johnebaker Thanks 👍😊 Yep i sometimes get that black frame at the end,

In this pic i added the clip highlighted in yellow, it has short frame at the end, the clip above is the same clip but I used the setting you mention to remove 1 image 👍 That'll do me & i think should be a solution for @Gregory-Richardson

Funny how there's not many controls in the Program Settings, but i don't think i've ever used or even really looked at that one 👴🧐😂

BTW i get a red Error uploading if i try to inc a picture on here,.

@johnebaker @AAProds I just tried 7 clips with the Crop Video option at 0, all have varying length of partial clip at the end, I changed Crop Video option to remove 1 image from the end, All clips now have that partial frame cut back to the last full frame, 👍👍

I still can't upload pics & all pics on this forum's comments are little blue/green picture icons,

@AAProds 👍

Just to check it wasn't cropping too much off the end, I lined up all those clips with the first frame & looked at the last frame, they are just that 1 partial frame shorter 👍
