Burning DVD

dan-sebastian wrote on 1/7/2018, 10:20 AM

Hope you can help, I have finished my project in MEPP 2017 and I add all the correct markers and chapters as required. I go to burn the dvd and it appears to be ok however 20 minutes later when the project say burning is complete. Nothing is burned on the disk. I have confirmed the burner is working correctly and does work fine..It is an external LG ultra slim Blu-ray DVD writer. Can you please let me know what I am doing wrong. Thank you

Hi, welcome to the Magix forums.

First, can you please read this post and ensure you have given us all the information requested there.

Second, can you please post a screenshot of the DVD Burn Screen? It looks like the image below:

Magix software is designed and optimised for Windows based PCs. Running it on a MAC under Parallels or any other VM is not really supported!

I suspect in your case the problem may be that MEP cannot properly access your DVD burner; I can see from your screenshot that it is listed but that does not mean, unfortunately, that MEP can use it! However, on that dropdown at the top of the screen where the burner is listed, if you click the down-arrow you should see an option "Image Recorder". This will create a disc image file which you should then be able to burn to DVD by using any standard disc burning software on your MAC.

Thanks for the suggestion Jeff, I tried this an this attachment is was was saved, I was able to burn it however does not play as a standard dvd would. The disc not recognized as a standard DVD format that will play as a dvd. I know the project is appox 4 gigs. Hope you can help. I'm not sure if the set up I am using will ever work since I am using a mac / parallels/ w10 home set up. But if we could get this to work correctly it could open up a whole new user base. Thanks

Hi Dan.

The attachment shows some of the files I would expect to see created by the Image Recorder process but the all-important multiple .vob files, which are the actual "video" are clearly missing, and the Image Recorder process would normally create a final .iso file (which is actually a zipped file containing ALL the files which go to make up the complete DVD).

Perhaps to explain a little more in detail: the image Recorder process begins in exactly the same way as the direct burn to disc process; a folder is created on your hard drive wherever you have told MEP to store Exports/DVD Images. It will be called something like "DVD_Image_(Your project name)" and will contain the files you show in your attachment and quite a few more .vobs. If you are burning direct to disc MEP will then burn all these files to the disc; if you have selected to use Image Recorder MEP will then combine ALL these files into one .iso file so that at the end of the process you will find BOTH the folder "DVD_Image_..." and a file called "(Your project name).iso".

It appears your export is failing at the point where the actual, all-important, .vob files should be being created. (All those other files are important but are simply the instructions to your DVD player about chapter points, aspect ratio, etc., etc.)

I assume from what you have written that you allowed the export process to continue until MEP said it was completed? If so, I think that the fact you are using a MAC might be the "limiting" factor; certainly, I can think of no other reason why only part of your project exports and then even that does not create a valid DVD. Just one thought: you are exporting the whole project and not merely a shorter "range"?

Sorry to not be able to suggest anything else. I've never used a MAC, though both my son-in-law and grandson have one. Neither uses any VM in order to run Windows as well so I can't even ask them to test out whether MEP can be successfully run on a MAC.

@dan-sebastian

Hi

See Magix advice on running one of their programs on a MAC here.

Note the section on using parallels - hardware devices are simulated and are not 'real' eg the burner

. . . . Everything in MEPP is working fine however does not burn the DVD. I have confirmed my DVD burner works and records fine . . . .

Can MEP actually see the DVD recorder? MEP running on Parallels can not normally see a burner because it requires direct access to it which Parallels does not provide because of the reason above.

. . . . . I know the project is appox 4 gigs. . . . .

Depending on what you mean by this is not clear - do you mean:

  1. The total video/images on the timeline comes to approx 4GB

    or

  2. The estimated disc space used is 4GB.

Of more relevance is the actual run time of the project as is on the timeline.

From the image of the DVD files the run time is approx 20 - 30 mins - is this correct?

Hey John,

Thanks again for responding, Yes MEP through Parallels does see my dvd burner, Everything in MEP looks and works fine. Just won't burn the disc. My work around is to do all my work in MEP and export it to an .mpeg file and burn it in Final cut on mac. I love the editing features and transitions in MEP over Final cut. Final cut is not user friendly. Very boring to use...I will continue to work on this problem and try to save the project as disc image and see if I can get this to work with all the files. I see that their was a major MEP update released over the weekend which I have done. I do realize MEP and Parallels on mac may not have worked correctly this was my choice to go this route. It is just so close to all work in Parallels. At least I have a work around for now..Thanks for the help...Stay warm in Berlin, BTW I was at the berlin Magix office and met with the Samplitude . Sequoia developers approx 10 years ago...You guys hiring in the USA specifically in the Florida area?

Hi Dan

. . . . MEP through Parallels does see my dvd burner . . . .

I suspect that is a virtual DVD drive and not the real drive, ie as I said above 'hardware devices are simulated and are not 'real' eg the burner'.

It is good that you have a workaround, another option to try is to use Image recorder in the Burn dialog drive drop down to create an ISO image and then burn this with a MAC compatible burner software.
