Can a tablet/phone camera be used as a "capture" device in Video ProX?

TrevorD wrote on 5/29/2020, 7:15 PM

I am wondering is it possible if you don't own a web cam, to use an android tablet as a capture device? If so, does Magix make a compatible app to make that link possible?

I installed an app called Camera MX by Magix. But it only seems to send files via wi-fi and not capture and sync as a USB connected device would.

Better still if anyone knows how to utilize the android tablet camera as a source, I'd love to know how to. My need it to record live into Video Pro X.

Thanks in advance :)

Hi

. . . . how to utilize the android tablet camera as a source . . . .

There is software out there to live stream from device to PC, however, AFAIK it is not possible to connect VPX to it, recording has to be done in the streaming software.

Keeping it easy a USB web cam would be my preferred option - 1080 webcams are available at very reasonable prices..

Cool, Thanks @johnebaker. Will probably go that direction. Yeah, I want to live record playing drums, guitar etc.Might wait til next pay and get a decent one. Save all the fuss.

Hi Trevor

If you have a Sony, Nikon, or Canon DSLR that doesn't even have to take video (as long as it has live-view) you can use a free program called digiCamControl to live stream with control over two cameras at once if needed. It also gives you complete control over the camera settings live including autofocus tracking, ISO and aperture. It's very comprehensive. You can't record the session though unless the camera being used has a video capability.

Thanks @CubeAce. Actually having an experiment using DroidCam with my Galaxy Tab. I have the audio source as my Akai EIE Pro and is being fed through the mixing desk. The capture seemed to work in VPX (connected using wifi). Though it started recording, good audio levels, it seems to have frozen up when I hit the stop. :) But I think no matter what I use (a good cam is still an investment), this test will help me identify how to use he tool. But it's looking promising.I have it configured @ 1280 x 720. That's the max for DroidCam. But it will do for testing.

TrevorD wrote on 5/30/2020, 5:48 AM

Hey @johnebaker and @CubeAce. Was a huge success, in spite of the freeze. I just have to work out why when I hit the stop button on the record, Nothing was working, except the video feed. But after a restart of VPX, the recording was there in my "record" folder.

Hi Trevor.

I wonder if the two programs are sharing a video driver?

Can you get DroidCam to use Direct X and see if that alleviates the problem?

Hey @CubeAce, Just did a very short 10 sec record using all the same setup. No freezing. It may have been that first test was pretty long and was trying to play catch up. But this new test just stopped perfectly and the new capture was immediately available to import to the timeline. So I am over the moon! Worked fine after all.

Hi

I think we have learned something new.

Pleased to hear you got it working.

Now if I could only capture the video stream over WiFi from my Sony camera. It has the capability to stream, however it was linked to the UStream, which used to be free for 'casual users' and is IBM Cloud and has to be paid for.

@CubeAce

. . . . Direct X and see if that alleviates the problem? . . .

DroidCam is presenting the video through DShow - better known as Direct Show which was originally part of the Micrososft Direct X package and is now a separate entity as part of the OS.

Thanks @johnebaker. I have a few screenshots. So what I might do over the next week is put a bit of a how I went about it kind of tut together. Though would be even better if Magix had a very similar app. I would pay what ever it was worth to have the higher res capture direct to VPX from my tablet or iPhone.

Hi Trevor.

Glad to hear you have solved your problem.

I've had something similar that I can't get to the bottom of recently with MEP, which is whenever I export a file from MEP to my SSD (Not the C: drive) I'm also experiencing a freeze before the file will play back in Film & TV but not with any of my internal SATA mechanical drives or external drives.

@CubeAce. Hmmm. Could be just something as simple as cache size, file/movie size, transfer rate, most probably a combination of all these factors. Like it all needs to get moved from somewhere to somewhere. That's a lot going on in the background. As well as what the computer is capable of. But I wish I knew more about the mathematics of this stuff. Not my strongest qualities. But my logical guess is that these are the places to look. That's usually all a freexe is. Something playing catch-up. ...just a guess :)
