Side by side and Top/Bottom require the 3D TV to support this - most did - and must be switched manually to display side by side or top/bottom display if the disc is not recognised as 3D.
The Blu-Ray standard format used in commercial discs is 'Row Interlaced', left image or right image first - this requires the MVC codec which is not available due to licencing restrictions and is unlikely to be made available for public use as 3D TV is 'dead'. AFAIK no 3D TV's have been manufactured since 2015/2016.
