Can't choose 44100 as sample rate in movie edit pro 2015 premium

JELSTUDIO wrote on 3/8/2015, 11:15 PM

Magix movie edit pro 2015 premium, windows 7 x64

The audio sample rate on the movie project page is locked at 48000. It's greyed out and no options can be chosen.

It doesn't matter if I import audio that is at 44100. It still stays locked at 48000 (it automatically suggests new video dimensions and video framerate, but there is no change to audio sample rate)

I can't export uncompressed AVI files with a sample-rate of 44100. The option is just greyed out.

I don't make DVDs, but youtube videos, and youtube converts all videos to 44100, so it would be better for audio-quality if I could stay in 44100 from start to finish (resampling audio affects audio-quality in a similar style to changing video-framerates, so obviously I'd like to avoid it)

If anybody has suggestions to what I might be doing wrong, I'd appreciate the advise :)

Thanks in advance.

JEL

Hi,

Here is what the VPX6 manual says:

Audio sample rate: The preset sample rate is 48 kHz. This sample rate is used for all recordings and is also the standard setting for DVD audio tracks. This setting guarantees optimal sound quality. Audio material at different sample rates (e.g. CD audio with 44 kHz) is automatically converted when loaded (resampling). Only change this value if you want to use audio with a different sample rate or if your sound card does not support this sample rate.

Thus 44 kHz is used for CD's, 48 for videos. I doubt that YouTube is somehow changing the audio part of an MP4 video. Where did you see that YouTube does this?

Below is a partial list of the format information for YouTube videos from this link. There is no mention of 44 kHz, only 48.

Advanced encoding settings

Recommended bitrates, codecs, and resolutions, and more

Container: .mp4
•No Edit Lists (or you may lose AV sync)
•moov atom at the front of the file (Fast Start)

Audio codec: AAC-LC
•Channels: Stereo or Stereo + 5.1
•Sample rate 96khz or 48khz

Video codec: H.264
•Progressive scan (no interlacing)
•High Profile
•2 consecutive B frames
•Closed GOP. GOP of half the frame rate.
•CABAC
•Variable bitrate. No bitrate limit required, though we offer recommended bit rates below for reference
•Chroma subsampling: 4:2:0

Hi John, thank you for replying :)

There are 2 main reasons I work in 44.1 kHz:

#1: I mainly do music (CD standard is 44.1 kHz and I use that for my masters)
#2: The sound-equipment I use (Yamaha Motif synth) only supports 44.1 kHz digital audio.

Youtube recommends uploading music-videos in 44.1 kHz:
https://support.google.com/youtube/answer/6039860?hl=en

All my tests have shown that they resample bitrates to 44.1, and here are 2 links with other users talking about it:
http://forum.videohelp.com/threads/359403-Youtube-upload-48-or-44-1-khz
https://obsproject.com/forum/threads/what-audio-sampling-rate-to-use-44-1khz-48khz.20088/

I don't know of any official youtube-page where it is stated that they resample.

At any rate (no pun intended) I can not choose to work in 44.1 kHz in Movie Edit Pro. It is hard-locked at 48 kHz. And I have no idea how to break free of that lock so I can keep my entire work-chain in 44.1 kHz.

Thanks again for replying.

Hi Jacob,

I looked at the links and did some further research.

Magix Video Pro X6 also fixes the sample rate at 48kHz.

From the information that I saw and the comments made, I think that the distinction between sr for CD's and Videos has to be understood. I can record to 48kHz with other Magix programs like Audio & Music Lab, Music Maker and Samplitude Music Studio, but I would only use that setting if the output was for input into a video program, to avoid upsampling.

Back to YouTube, again a distinction needs to be made. An audio that will be uploaded and the video portion an image or something made in YouTube, could be either rate. However a video file will have sound embedded in it at 48kHz, and from what I saw, that is how YouTube expects it.

When you record from your Yamaha, to what are you recording? A DAW or to MEP directly? Can you not adjust the sr to 48kHz?

Hi John,

I tested the actual rates used by youtube by playing a video (that I uploaded with 48 kHz audio) in VLC. The audio-part is indeed downsampled/transcoded into 44.1 kHz. So youtube does not let the audio-rate stay at 48 kHz even if you upload such a file.

The Yamaha synth has a digital out that is fixed at 44.1 kHz 16 bit. It can not be changed to anything else. I record in a DAW on the computer. The entire chain is digital. If I record the analog output from the Yamaha I could easily choose different rates, but the digital output is hardlocked by the synth. I don't know why Yamaha decided to lock it like this, but on the Motif-synth that's what they've done.

Anyway, I just discovered I can start a new project in Magix Movie Edit Pro at 44.1 kHz if I START the new project at this setting. I just can't change it from 48 to 44.1 if I started a project at default settings.

So I guess the problem is no longer really a problem :)

Well, we live and learn all the time :)

Thanks for your time John, I consider this question solved and closed :)

jacob.

Hi Jacob,

Glad to see that you found the solution. I looked at the startup screen, the Program settings, but not the Project settings where you undoubtedly found the solution.

Magix Video Pro X6 makes it even easier. Here is the startup screen, and I just noticed the pop down:

As my late mother would say, "You can't see for lookin'."

Regards,

Hi john,

Yes, I found it in the same place where you found it (on the picture you show) :)

I just have to be aware of it when starting a new project, so I don't get caught out halfway through a project :)
