Hi,

Quick answer without seeing your screen, bottom right of the preview screen, if the lightning bolt is highlighted blue, press on P to turn it off. When on, you don't see effects.

Ho

To modify John CB's answer - right click the Lightning bolt and check that only these options are set

Note if you are not using proxy files you will not have the Use proxy objects however it is a good idea to use proxy files for smoother playback on complicated timelines - the setting is in the projects settings E key.

Sharpness changes you will only see when it is applied to a single image or video clip - you will not see any change if you use the Master video effects sharpness control which affects the complete video.

The Lightning bolt can be left turned on (blue) for smoother playback.
