Can't save my project!

lynns wrote on 5/9/2014, 8:15 PM

I’ve been working on a promotional video for a convention, the last couple of months. And today, while trying to save my work on the project, this error pops up saying “An error occurred while writing the project file” I took a screen shot of  the window so you can see it for yourself. Any suggestions on what to do? I can’t exit the file without losing all my progress. And when I try to save it, that same error  keeps popping up. I’m supposed to have this done by Monday. (Deadline, 5/12/14 Though thankfully, it doesn't HAVE to be done then, it just should be if possible) Any help much appreciated! Thank you so much.

Now that is one problem I have never seen before!

However, some quite random thoughts: do you have enough space on your HDD to allow VPX to save the project file?  Have you tried the "Save As ..." route, giving the project a different name?  Is there something (e.g. a certain video file/photo/other object) which could cause VPX to throw this error?

In order to avoid losing all your work if you exit the project, do you have VPX set to create automatic "back-up" saves at given intervals?  If so, could you open a new tab (movie), still keeping the original open, and in this new tab choose to open the most recent .BAK file?  Can you then "save" that version?  Again I would suggest a new name for the project.  NB, I've never tried this process so certainly cannot guarantee it would work.

I'm sure other users may well have suggestions to offer.  Hope you can get this problem resolved.

I know i'm 4 years late (!), but since i found the answer to this and no other thread seems to mention this: The problem is the LENGTH of your project time wise. Either remove/delete the unwanted parts or split your project into two halves and it will save just fine!

@shakm

I know i'm 4 years late

Indeed you are (well, nearly four years actually) and, since the OP never returned to tell us whether he/she was ever able to resolve the problem we will never know the outcome!

However, I have to say that I have exported video projects long enough to completely fill Dual-Layer DVD discs, so up to 3 hours or more, and not experienced any problem of project length causing a failure to save.

I think this thread should be considered as "expired", due to its age and the lack of any other participants. I hope it can now go "back to sleep". At this stage I will not lock it but if it generates further posts which do nothing to helpfully further user-knowledge I will do so.

The project that presented this problem for me is the one i'm currently working on and is in total well over 8 hours in length (because i'm using a couple of movie-tabs as a sort of library and also working with 8 different angles/cameras). None of the solutions you suggested to the OP worked for me and I tested / verified plenty of times that the total length was indeed the problem, so i really think this thread should at least stay visible - your customers will thank you for it!

8 hours is indeed a very, very large project. As such, it is considerably bigger than the great majority of we fellow-users would even consider creating; as you stated the solution is to, essentially, create a series of smaller projects.

However, we still do not know whether the length of project was in any way relevant to the OP, and hence this thread is still at least partially redundant. So ti will now be locked, sorry.

BTW, when you write your customers will thank you for it you are clearly not aware this is a user to user forum, not Magix support. As a moderator I am not a Magix employee, merely another user with some experience of Magix products who is charged by Magix with voluntarily "overseeing" the forums.
