Cannot find file from MVD

mjSunde wrote on 12/5/2017, 3:39 AM

So, i just got a new computer and i want to move all my project files over to it.

TLDR:  MVP's and MVD's won't see files when i point them to their new location.

I keep all my raw footage on an external drive, so i plugged that into the new computer and copied all my MVP files the old computer over to the new one too.  When i tried to open one of the MVP files, Video Pro X asked for the location of the files I imported, because my external drive is now on a different letter (i can't change it to the old one because it's taken).  When i gave the program the new folder, it kept asking for the location of files that were in the folder i just gave it (not a big problem just inconvenient).  On my old computer Video Pro X would ask for a folder, then automatically keep looking in it until it needed a new location.

After a while it would ask for a file location, but when i entered it, it just asked again.  I know i was giving it the right file (i triple checked), but it just kept repeating the same message for the same file.  I wasn't sure what to do after that, so it tried exporting each movie as a MVD file (from the old computer).  I made a new project on the new computer, and started to import the MVD files.  The first one worked fine (it let me chose the new file location), but every MVD after that had the same problem as the MVP (it wouldn't accept the new file location).

I have a lot of other MVP's and exported MVD's of them and they're all doing the same thing (Video Pro X won't accept the new file location most of the time).  I tried reinstalling Video Pro X but not installing the updates, that didn't work.  I tried loading a MVD on my old computer (i changed some file's locations so it would ask me where they are) and everything worked fine again.  So i'm not sure what to do now.  Please help!

If possible i would like to get the MVD's working first, because that would work better for my situation.  But any help is appreciated.

DETAILS: my old computer is windows 8.1 and my new one is windows 10.  I tried all this on MAGIX Video Pro X versions 15.0.0.56, 15.0.3.154, and 15.0.5.195.  Below is a screenshot of what i was taking about.

Hi

. . . . so i plugged that into the new computer and copied all my MVP files the old computer over to the new one too. . . .

This is probably a permissions difference on the external hard drive. On the new PC the owner account is different to that on the old PC - they may have the same name, however they have different SID's which is what is used for setting permissions.

Try copying all the source files from the external HD to the hard drive on the new PC as well and then open the project.

Thank you for your reply.

I copied the files onto my local hard drive, but when i opened the MVP, it did the same thing (it didn't accept the new file location most of the time). I tried the same thing with a MVD, same result. I can open the files in Windows Media Player just fine (from both the local and external drives). I also just now tried giving myself full control to the files (in the file's security permissions), but that didn't seem to make a difference. What should i do next?

Was this in the Permissions settings or the Owner settings?

Check that the folder containing the files and the files have inherited the correct Owner settings - below is an example of mine

It was the permission settings. I just now checked the owner settings and they where correct (i owned them). I also just tried loading a MVD and when it asked for a video file, i gave it an audio temp file (it wanted "videoname.avi" and i gave it videoname.avi.wav) just to see what would happen. It seemed to work, the MVD loaded in with my edits and i can play everything. I'm not sure if what i did will cause problems some time in the future or not, but at least it's working for now. I'm still having trouble with MVD's but its kind of another topic, so i put in under a new post.

Thanks for your help!
