Cannot record from external microphone to Music Maker 2021

As a complete novice I cannot record music from an external mic (which was fully operational on other recording SW) onto Music Maker 2021. I am on Windows 10 using a 2020 Lenovo Laptop. What settings do I need in Music Maker? . Thank you
