Clean-up Wizard ... how to make it clean only a specific project ?

VHS_guy_2019 wrote on 7/19/2019, 7:14 PM

hi ,

I am trying to understand how clean-up wizard targets  and cleans. so I can do a total removal of finished projects and their related files.

The objective -

I have 3 projects bloating up my hard drive. I want to totally remove one of the finished projects to make room on  the hard drive. I don't want to save anything at all that is related to that project anymore (its already finished and burnt to dvd, and now its taking up space on my small hard drive) ,,, But I don't want the other two projects on my computer to be touched, altered, or affected by clean-up wizard ......

The problem -

I already tried to use clean-up wizard once to remove a single project and all files, material, data,  etc.  related to just that project.

but not only did the "clean-up wizard " remove the project that I wanted removed,  it also removed all the chapter markers and dvd menu layouts from other projects on my computer that I was still working on.

The question -

when you open up "clean-up wizard" , what options / buttons do you "click on" to make it target just the one project for removal and not go after the other projects and their related data / files / etc.

(I honestly don't remember if I hit "specific file" choice, or the "superfluous file" choice,,, but what ever I did it messed the other projects up, it didn't erase them, it just messed up their chapters and stuff as mentioned above.)

So I guess what  I need to know is the order of operations needed to target just the one specific project only and all of its related data, video, and audio that magix maybe storing  throughout my computer , while at the same time not have it touch or alter other existing projects that are also on the computer..???

or is this something that "clean-up wizard" is even capable of doing ? perhaps my expectations of the wizards functionality is wrong ?.... im not sure really ...

appreciate any help on this subject,,,, thank you .

☺️

Hi

The usage of the Clean up Wizard is in the user manual available under Help.

I use a different method of working to ensure segregation of projects and resources used and backup finished projects to external hard drives using SyncBack without copying all the superfluous files that MEP creates. Once done the project resources etc are removed from the working drive.

hi john, thanks for the info,,,

I read the help chapter regarding clean up wizard, Its vague , it doesn't explain well enough how to remove a project and all its related junk...

something happened today

I had to try clean-up wizard again because my computer gave a warning that my "C" drive was coming close to being full...which shouldn't have happened as there was lots of space last week.

I guessed It was cause of magix, so I tried clean up wizard today to try and make space...

But the odd thing is that none of my magix project folders are not on the "C" drive to begin with,,,all my projects are stored on the D drive...

so I tried the cleanup wizard, it seemed to clean up the project off the "D" drive, but sitll my C drive was almost full after the wizard finished,,,,

so I typed the name the project into the computer sytems search box in hope of manually locating the files and manually deleting them,,, but only a few small sized magix backup files showed up on the C drive (where I don't keep any of my project files at all)...

I was just about to do a full reinstall of windows to wipe C drive clean , but I instead tried "PC CHECK UP" software that came with my computer,,, and "PC CHECK UP" software did it,, it found a whole lot of magix backup and backup/crash junk hidden on the C drive, which I was not able to find using a normal search method... about 30 gigs of backup junk hidden on the C drive...

only then using PC CHECKUP was I able to manually remove that bunch of junk...

So two things are ticking me off right now.

1 - why is clean-up wizard not finding locating and cleaning up "ALL" material related to a magix project...

2 - and why is magix putting stuff in obscure hard to find places outside of the project folder, in this case on the C drive where my operating system is...

Clean-up wizard  should have included in it a simple "single project removal option" that states to the customer that by clicking on this button it will remove all material from the entire computer that is related to one particular project . all material means all material including backup, crash, and other assorted junk/stuff..

wizard should have three choices that the new-bee plug and play user like me cant even mess up...

1 - delete a single chosen project and all its files including backups, and reports from entire computer.

2 - delete a single chosen project BUT keep the backup files/ reports/ etc. stored in project file where they can be easily found.

3 - select individual items for deletion... if your computer savy and want to individually pick through a bunch of confusingly named files , folders etc  and choose for your self which individual  item to delete , then knock yourself out and have a ball, option 3 is for you....(but its not my cup o tea,,, I basically just wanna hit record and see dvd pop out the other side  and that's it really)

clean up wizard is either to vague or to particular for the average person to use, the first time I tried it, it erased all the chapter markers from all the other projects on my PC,,,

second time I tried it, I gave me option of picking individual folders/ items one at a time,,,the problem with that option was I have no idea what those items folders  do,,, and if I did know what they did , it would take for ever to delete all of them one at a time...well beyond my scope of knowledge,,,

my opinion is the wizard is not that great a wizard for average person, maybe if your a computer expert you can get it to work for you, but for the average person its vague and doesn't even remove the primary clutter from the pc,  and that clutter that should have never been put on the C drive to begin with,,, thank goodness for PC CHECKUP coming to the rescue, I was close to doing a system reinstall.

either the help manual needs more explaining to do, or the wizard needs some programmer to do some more tweeking on it... and least not forget the part about crash log thingys taking up gigs of space in a secluded hidden away part of the pc...

no more wizard for me,,,from now on I will use PC CHECKUP  to clean up old projects and their hidden junk files.

I think magix softare program from what ive tried of it can do some amazing things, but the confusion I just went through with the wizard is a major drag and let down... sorry to the makers of magix for the spat of anger and negativity but its been a frustrating day tryin to figure this issue out..

and thank you John EB  for trying to help , much appreciated. :)

Hi

. . . .  it found a whole lot of magix backup and backup/crash junk hidden on the C drive, which I was not able to find using a normal search method... about 30 gigs of backup junk hidden on the C drive... . . . .

Do the necessary folder locations point to the D: drive in the program settings - these are mine, your D: is my W: drive.

If any of the top 6 settings point to the C: drive then MEP is putting files there.

Note: the Recordings folder setting I change for when doing narrations (rare) for the project I am working on.

Also did you move your Documents folder to the D: drive?

The Magix/DVD_BD_Projects folder is where all my projects go in appropriate sub folders each project/subject having their own folder with further sub folders for the different resources - see image below showing the 'Blank' folder structure which I copy, paste and rename for new projects.

The folder structure above still requires some manual tidying up once the project is complete and I then use SyncBack to backup the project folders, as is, to external hard drives, setting it not to copy .HDP, .H0 files, and proxy files, where used, which are created by MEP. The reason for this is the MEP backup only copies used resources and does not copy any video, images and other files which have not been used in that particular project.

hi John EB,

I have the exact same setup as in the image you posted above,,, all fields are set to D drive(my designated magix folder location), except the last two fields "audio" and "image"  which are exactly set same as yours above to the "C" drive...

I don't exactly remember the full name of the path where PC CHECKUP found the hidden magix folders in C drive, but it was in a folder called apps I think,,,, but what was odd is that I used the standard bottom left icon windows 7 search box  to do a search for all magix stuff on the PC and it didn't find those ones at all,,, only PC CHECKUP was able to find/show the stuff..

John I'm going to stick to doing an occasional PC CHECKUP scan from now on, its easier for me to keep the computer from bloating up...it is too bad the software itself doesn't do a more thorough yet less complicated job of self cleaning.

thanks again John EB for the help and tips.

cheers.
