Compression of mpeg video is too high

Hi can anyone explain to me why I am not able to deside how much compression is used when burning a dvd, as magix already compresses it to much before the burn process?Yes I see you can set the quality but even on its highest setting it takes a 8GB video and compresses it to 3.7 or so GB leaving a lot of space still on disc that could have been used!

Hi

. . . . why I am not able to deside how much compression is used when burning a dvd . . . . it takes a 8GB video and compresses it to 3.7 or so GB leaving a lot of space still on disc . . . .

An answer without more information is going to be somewhat generic

  • A standard DVD disc capacity is 4.7 GB ie ~ 2hrs of video

  • The presets in MEP are optimised for quality/size and maximum player compatibility

  • Increasing the bitrate to fill the discs and give better quality may render the disc unplayable on some DVD players that cannot handle the higher bitrate.

  • If you are starting with Full HD video - 1920 * 1080 - and burning a DVD then there is a significant reduction in 'file' size as the resolution is being dropped to 720 x 576 (PAL) or 720 x 480 (NTSC).

Thanks for reply John, so is there any other way of doing this so that I can get better quality? You see even after setting all to its highest it is still very compressed as per attached sample and yet the video is only 45min long

No - for a 45 minute video at 'standard' DVD compression the disc space used would be between 1.7 and 2.0 GB, you are already nearly double this at 3.4 GB.

As I said previously, at the bitrate you have specified, which is close to the DVD theoretical maximum, you run the risk of some DVD players not being able to handle this high bitrate correctly - this can lead to visual artefacts/blocking/tearing of the image on screen.

If you are playing the DVD on a Full HD or 4K TV, then the image is going to be poor due to the upscaling of 720 x x 576 PAL (or 720 x 480 NTSC) video resolution to 1920 x 1080 or higher.

If you want higher quality then you would have to move up to Blu-Ray and a video resolution of 1920 x 1080 pixels. It is possible to burn Blu-Ray to DVD discs providing the movie does not exceed 25 - 30 mins long - you do still need a Blu-Ray burner and player.

HI,

2 factors displayed image quality and bitrate. You use top quality as usual is 9 for image quality but if you click the button Adapt the bitrate you can increase the value over 9800 but some video player cannot handle and freeze or gives pixelated picture. As mentioned Magix use safe parameters values. If you want more quality, export your video in HD format or mts file or mp4 on USB memory key but before check the compatibily of your TV to accept this format.
