Hi,

First, in Windows Explorer, go to:

C:\Program Files\MAGIX\Video Pro X\13

and open Shortcuts_EN.pdf, print it out, go through it, and keep it at hand for quick reference. There are a couple of errors, but you probably won't find them for a while.

Second, go to Program Settings, Playback, and under Spacebar Behavior, uncheck "Spacebar stops at current position." Now when you press spacebar to stop playback, the playback marker will return to where you started playback. To stop playback at the current frame, press on K instead of the spacebar.

It's that simple.

I do recommend viewing my tutorials on Getting Started in MEP part 3, and Basic Editing parts 1 and 2.

Ray, that doesn't stop, or start, playback, unless you have a range on the timeline. Then it will only play the range.

I use the range markers so often to work on sections it didn't occur to me it was reacting to them.

The beauty of using the arrow keys is that you don't have to look at them, and they are in a clear part of the keyboard. This nonsense of having to hit a particular letter key (in this case K) to achieve something is a pain.

Similar to the removal of the dragging of the screen; used to just drag on one of the (now gone) vertical markers, now we need to do a two-fingered salute. Nerds in control, methinks. If it ain't broke, don't fix it! MEP's developers need to talk to the Xara troops. Now they know what user-friendliness is all about.

It seems that most upgrades (not just to Magix software) are made by software writers who either don't actually use the product and/or don't recognize what worked before they make their so-called improvements. Just like the audio techs who mix the speech and background music/sounds for TV and other programs and make the background stuff too loud because they are so familiar with the dialog that they could look at characters speaking and know what they are saying, instead of taking into account that viewers of a program are watching it for the first time and don't have any idea of what the characters are saying and still won't because the background noises are much too loud. Your comment about Xara is making me consider purchasing it, although I haven't done work on my website for years, but if Xara is offered at a low price I might give it a try.

I'm finding it frustrating that a number of Magix tutorials/videos I've looked at recently talk about solutions using MEP that don't seem to work in VPX, even though I would expect VPX to just expand on various capabilities rather than take a different approach.

Hi,

The K shortcut key and the Spacebar stops at current position in the Program Settings have been there in both VPX and MEP for as long as I can remember - nothing new here. Remember, you can always change many of the shortcuts. What you can't do is to use the same key to do different things depending on what you are thinking. For that, we would need Intelligent Artificial Intelligence.

I suggest that you look at the JKL shortcuts to see what they do.

@BSMan which tutorials? Not mine, I hope, as everything that I show about MEP applies to VPX, but not everything about VPX applies to MEP.

I use the Contour ShuttlePro V2 with VPX with buttons programmed to do many of the repetitive shortcuts that I use without having to remove my hands from the ShuttlePro and the mouse. Right now, I have 3 banks, one for various playback modes, one for editing (trimming, copying effects, and more), the third for importing. Soon to come will be one for audio.

As for Xara, can't work without it. See my tutorials on what can be done with it with VPX/MEP. I use it for much more. For use with VPX, you only need Xara Photo & Graphics Designer, not Designer Pro X. Of course, if you want to also do web design, then get Designer Pro X (which is what I use).

Hi Bob.

I totally sympathise and a main reason I stick to using the mouse rather than use keyboard shortcuts.

Apart from when developers change the shortcuts or remove a function, there is for me at least, the task of remembering shortcuts for at least 5 applications that inevitably have different control keys for the same function in each program.

Then what happens if I press a wrong key and don't notice if it changed another function or can't remember how to undo the command?

I know everyone has a different workflow and whatever it is should be respected by others. Just because I can't do something easily I shouldn't overlook its usefulness to others.

I'm not sure developers do change things without thinking or realising the consequences. It may be due to other reasons involving coding we have no knowledge about. Also coding tends to be done in teams. It must be hard to integrate all that code into a cohesive whole that works across a mongrel sea of assorted parts that vary from user to user.
