Could not connect to selected device

Gita-Lalezari wrote on 2/13/2022, 5:29 PM

Hello,

I just purchased this program for my pc which runs windows 10. I have installed a firewire port and I was able to capture my movies from my canon mini dv recorder last night. I was able to transfer 2 of my films, but when I went back to it this morning, the message above pops up. Last night, the message popped up once, so I closed the program and went back in, and it worked. However, the device that it had picked up was some microsoft device which I do not have. So I am not sure how that happened.

I tried playing back the movie from the dv recorder and then clicking the record button in the Movie Editor, and once the message pops up and I click ok, it stops the dv recorder. So I know that it has access to it.

I have tried to see if the drivers need to be updated, but I can't understand what has changed since last night.

Please help.

Thank you,

Gita

@Gita-Lalezari

Welcome to MEP. I hooked up my Canon HV20 to check MEP 2021 (unfortunately I don't have MEP 2022 on a firewire computer).

On the DV Recording screen, "Canon HV20" briefly flashed up but then the DV Device Driver box showed "Microsoft DV Camera and VCR". I've checked Scenalyzer (another DV capture program) and it too shows the Microsoft label when my camera is connected.

I can record the video with that "Microsoft DV camera" as the DV device.

My system behaves like yours: if I play the tape, then hit record on the MEP recording panel, the tape stops.

Regarding drivers, I think that, since you have got it working once, the drivers should be OK. My understanding is that MEP doesn't have a driver for your camera; it will simply be using the device as shown to it by Windows.

At this point, I suggest you do a shutdown and restart of your computer. With your camera switched off, connect it to your computer, then switch it on in Play mode. Then start MEP, then open the MEP DV recording panel.

Wait for the DV Device line (Step 1) to become active; it will probably say "Microsoft..."

Hit Play on the MEP panel to see if the tape plays and displays.

My Windows Device Manager shows this:

My struggle is over! I built my (now) system 2 in 2011 when DV was king and MPEG 2 was just coming onto the scene and I needed a more powerful system to cope. Since then we've advanced to MP4 and to bigger and bigger resolutions. I was really suffering, not so much in editing (with proxies) but in encoding, which just took ages. A video, with Neat Video noise reduction applied, would encode at 12% of film speed. My new system 1 does the same job at 160% of film speed. Marvellous. I'm keeping my old system as a capture station for analogue video tapes and DV.

Thank you so much for the thorough explanation and screen shots. My problem is that no matter what I do, I know longer get the Microsoft DV recorder. The only device that shows up is my Canon mini dv and it does not allow me to pick anything else. I am not sure how it got to Microsoft Dv Recorder the two times that I was successful.

Any suggestions?

Thank you.

@Gita-Lalezari

I would check and update your Firewire driver.

My initial "default" Windows 10 driver was this:

I then followed this procedure:

https://www.startech.com/en-au/faq/firewire-cards-windows-legacy-driver-swap

and ended up with this driver:

I've been able to access my camera with that latest driver; it comes up as a Microsoft DV device (Canon is not in the list).

See if that helps.

Edit: there's some pretty comprehensive info on Firewire issues here (the install procedure from Startech above basically covers these though):

Great stuff Gita. Glad you're up and running.

I actually fixed one of my own problems during all that. Another program I use to capture DV, WinDV, stopped working a while back but is now working again with the latest Firewire driver.

Win win!

Hi again,

Sorry to bug you. So, I turned off my computer last night and I tried to access the camera again this morning it reverted back to Canon and no Microsoft DV. I check my driver and re-installed it just in case but now I am back to square one.

I appreciate your help if you have any clue.

Thanks,

Gita

Oh, I'm sorry to hear that. Nothing like an inflate then a deflate! It could be either Windows or MEP.

Try using WinDV to capture your video. You'll be familiar with the first part, checking your drivers.

Thanks for your reply. It seems like even WinDV is giving me issues. It does not want to recognize Microsoft Dv Recorder. It only shows the Cannon mini dv. Any suggestions on how I can tackle this problem?

I appreciate it.

Thank you.

Ah ha. Same as mine (I have an HV20).

Have your captured your video in DV or HDV?

You can tell which format by playing the tape and checking the top of the LCD: it will say DV or HDV.

If it is HDV, you'll need to use the "HDV camera" capture button to record into MEP (or HDVSplit)

WinDV is only for DV format, not HDV.

Yes. It is HDV, and I had tried that before but it gives me the same thing. I tried going back to the original driver and reload the new driver to see if it makes any difference. But nothing.

AAProds wrote on 2/14/2022, 11:54 PM

Back from golf. Yes me too. I set my camera to HDV and tried to capture HDV with MEP; it displays "Cannot connect to selected device" with "Canon HV 20 HDV" in the Device Driver window.

I assume that MEP's HDV capture is broken.

You'll have to capture with HDVplit, as per my tute I linked to above.

As with DV, I don't use MEP to capture HDV anyway.
