Creating fade outs and ins

Hi

This basic example is with 4 images and a 5th image fading in/out in the centre, all clips have had size position applied - if you want the fade in to be full screen on the centre (main) camera then do not apply Size & Position to that clip.

This was achieved with the objects on the timeline as shown below, I have used for images however the same works for video clips.

Hi Bob.

The easiest way is to cut the clip into several clips. There is no actual cutting as everything within a video editor is instructional and virtual rather than physical so there should be no going out of sync with the audio as long as the video track is not linked to the audio track while it is being 'cut'. I often 'cut' a file into equal frame lengths of no more than three frames to give a 'shimmer' effect to a fade when applying an animated background pattern or colour.

If the clip does go out of sync then there is normally a problem with the original video file, such as happens with variable frame rate files.

Actually, the audio is a separate file because I like to record the audio separately rather than put it on the camcorder (which my camcorder does allow me to do). That way I can record the audio at 24 bit resolution, rather than 16 bit, so that I can do whatever I need to it without compromising the quality. So based on your comment it looks like creating several clips is the best solution. I thought that might be the case, but also thought it would be good to keep the main camera file as one unit. Just have to be careful not to move those clips around at all.

Hi Bob.

Dragging either the sides of a clip to give a fade or the center to drag down should not alter the position of the clip.

Any mistake can be undone as long as you realise you have moved it

Here is one of my extreme examples.

Those are different levels used for the background 'lighting'.

Keyframe the video level. Effects>Video Effects>Chroma Key>Video Level slider. This is for MEP.

Negates chopping up your video object.

Hi,

Why don't you use the Multi-cam feature? The resulting cut up video goes on track 1, the entire audio on track 2. Once done and happy with the cut points, turn off Multi-cam and make transitions by dragging the head or tail over the adjacent clip. As you indicated, do not move anything.

I did a tutorial a long time ago on how to use Multi-cam. It's still valid as far as I know.
