Deleting all .ho files?

terrypin wrote on 6/27/2017, 8:48 AM

I have around 7,000 files on this PC with the extension .h0

Some are remnants of old projects, but most are built-in. For example I have 13 identical copies of
C:\ProgramData\MAGIX\Movie Edit Pro 2016 Premium\VideoEffects\Styles\2013_Love\ROSEN.H0
from various MEP versions and their daily and weekly backups.

I'm minded to delete the lot in one grand cleanup gesture.

Anyone see a reason against that please?

Hi Terry

None - I do it regularly - they will be recreated if you go back to the project.

Also when I backup each finished project I delete the .H0 and .HDP and proxy files - saves a lot of disc space, especially removing the proxy files.

A lot of stuff also gets put in the AudioTemp folder especially if you use the Soundtrack Maker and proxy files, these you will need to sift through as some of them will be required for projects past and present.

Do you use MEP to backup the project and files to a folder for archiving?

Hi John,

Does that go for the bulk, those h0 files that come with MEP? I've always wondered what purpose these serve, as I've assumed (but never tested) that if/when the associated effect or whatever is used in a project, these temporary files will get created. Perhaps their prior existence just speeds up the operation?

Same for HDP I assume?

Yes, I do use the MEP backup project and media. Although hesitantly because of the HD storage needed. As you've probably gathered from our recent discussions, I use many very large AVI captures from Google Earth, and the GB quickly accumulate, so a backup of a 30 minute project can take 10-15 GB. They go to my 4TB HD, but that needs daily and weekly backups, so...

Hi Terry

. . . . Does that go for the bulk, those h0 files that come with MEP? . . . .

Are you referring to the ones in some of the

C:\ProgramData\MAGIX\Movie Edit Pro version\VideoEffects\Styles\

subfolders?

You should find that only some of the sub folders have these in them ie the ones that have been used by various effects or templates.

Looking at the folders that have them in I would suspect they also created on first use and therefore could be deleted; there are also some .HDP files in there as well.

Hi John,

Yes, those and very many more subfolders. Just the first few examples from scores: C:\ProgramData\MAGlX\Movie Edit Pro 2014 Premium\_Demo, C:\ProgramData\MAGlX\Movie Edit Pro 2014 Premium\_Demo_3D, C:\ProgramData\MAGlX\Movie Edit Pro 2014 Premium\IntroOutro, etc. And all those .ogg seem to have an HDP.

Agreed, I can't think of any other explanation for the existence of these H0 and HDP files. Namely that they are created when the effect or template or whatever element is initially used. That would explain why in many cases for 2014 (which inlcludes successive transfers from earlier versions) I seem to have a full set. Some puzzling cases remain though, where I don't recall ever using those elements. Maybe they get created when you merely try them from the media pane, without import? I'll test sometime.

Anyway, I've just deleted about 27,000!

Many had long been redundant as they came across with my XP PC stuff over a year ago, so that I had access if needed. Many others were my routine backups. And of course they cover many ancient MEP versions, as I've copied most stuff across with every new installation.

BTW, also got rid of many hundreds of unwanted non-english INI files.

At completion, I could swear I heard an audible sigh of pleasure from my PC... 😉

Of course, I have yet to look out for any negative effects!
