Deleting effects for all members of a group

Basel-Shishani wrote on 6/23/2021, 3:46 AM

Greetings community,

My today's issue is with the inconsistent way MEP applies effects to members of a group. If I select a group and apply an effect, say resizing, then it gets applied to all members of the group. Now if I select the group again and apply 'Delete effects' (by right clicking on the effect), then the deletion only affects the one highlighted member of the group (heavier yellow), while the remaining members keep the effect.

This is really annoying because if I'm not paying attention, then I delete an effect and apply it again for the group, and I end up with one member with the modified effect, with the rest of the members having the effect applied twice! (Showing as a single effect in the list but with resizing effect applied twice).

I see a menu option to (Effects>Video object effects>Reset video effects), but it removes ALL effects for ALL objects.

Now there must be a method that allows me to delete a *specific effect* (say resizing but not chroma), to *all members* of a group. How can I achieve that?

Hi

. . . . Now if I select the group again and apply 'Delete effects' (by right clicking on the effect), then the deletion only affects the one highlighted member of the group (heavier yellow), while the remaining members keep the effect. . . . .

I do not see a 'Delete effects' on right clicking an object whether in a group or not.

To delete all effects in the group either: right click and from the popup menu select, Video effects, Reset video effects or use the keyboard shortcut Ctrl + Alt + -

This works for me - only grouped items have the effects reset.

Also check that you have not 'double grouped' objects - ie have a group within another group.

Right click an *effect* not an object:

Basically I need a method to apply the delete op of a *single effect* on *all group members*, which is the expected behaviour, rather than to a single object of the group. What actually happens is that the effect is deleted of only a single member of the group that has the selection (heavy yellow colour).

Say all group members have the same effect like 'resize', and some other effects like 'chroma' or whatever. I want to remove this 'resize' effect across the group members, without removing other effects from the group members, and without removing any effects outside the group members.

The use case is as follows: I select a group that already has other effects on it, and apply new effect X to it and it gets applied to all group members. For some reason I stuffed with effect X and I don't want to bother editing it, rather I just want to remove it without affecting the other effects on group members. So I need to do this delete effect on all group members for effect X at once rather that going through the group members one by one which is cumbersome.

Hi

Thanks for the image, the option you have shown is not the correct one for grouped objects, the Delete effects option only works on single objects or the selected (darker yellow) object in a group and is part of the Keyframing attributes for effects that can be applied to objects

For clearing all objects in a group or single objects the method I gave in my previous post is the correct method.

@johnebaker

Thanks for the response, but I've already mentioned the method your suggesting in my OP. The method you give does not answer the question because it removes ALL EFFECTS. I have highlighted this in OP and in my response to your earlier comment. I'm not after a method that removes all the effects on the selected objects, but rather one that removes a specific effect. I just want to remove the gamma correction for example on all members but want to keep others like chroma and resize etc.

Hi Basel.

As far as I'm aware what you want is not currently an option.

You want a box similar to the one that allows you to select which effects to remove similar to the one where a group effects can be selected that have been applied to one object and then applied to a selected group of objects.

Ray.

@CubeAce

Thanks.

The problem I'm having is the overlaps of the effects on multiple objects. So now I figured out a workaround technique using your tip on applying effects to all objects on the track form my last post. So normally most of the objects on the track take the same effects with one or two odd objects requiring extra effects. So what I can do is to move those odd ones to a separate track then it won't hurt to add/remove uniform effects to all on the track. I can just edit or remove effects on one object then copy to the rest. The odd objects can be worked separately on their track.

I wonder if the selective application of effects like I'm describing in OP is available in the more advanced Video Pro X?!

EDIT:

> You want a box ...

Yes, actually two of them would be even better:

One for: Video edit> Remove from selected,

and another for: Video edit> Apply to selected,

If these two options were available, it would make it much more flexible to work with effects.

Hi

To remove a specific effect from an object or group of objects which have multiple effects applied the effect reset button is used - see video below, where I remove a colour correction effect from a group of clips.

Repeat for every effect you need to remove.

Hi John.

I get it. Because the effects are grouped undoing one from the master effects box undoes the effect from the selected group. Why didn't I think of that?
