Different Versions of MEP Opening Incorrectly?

CarpentersMate wrote on 4/24/2019, 3:29 AM

Hi Gang

I was under the impression if you're trying out different versions of MEP 'they will live together'? Unless I've missed something, an MEP15 project seems to only open with MEP18? As for the latest version of MEP18 (its only my opinion), the 'update step' has become a distraction. The software works smoothly (very nicely) but its bothersome to wait for or try to stop the update before I can get to a project. I've completely removed those portions of the bundled package but it still resorts to "Wait Please" I'm sure other folks appreciate the lastest attractive templates etc ... Hoping 'MEP17 Plus 2017' will tie up less time requiring fewer updates before opening a project? 'Remind Me Later' is not a permanent 'cease' Thank You

Hi

. . . . Unless I've missed something, it appears a 'later version' seems to supersede an earlier version? Specifically an MEP15 project will only open with MEP18 . . . . .

Assuming you mean you are referring to projects form MEP 15, which you open in MEP 2018 and then save from MEP 2018, then that is correct - there is no backwards compatibility due to the significant differences between the 2 programs.

. . . . the 'update step' has become a distraction. The software works smoothly (very nicely) but its bothersome to wait for or try to stop the update before I can get to a project. . . .

The update dialog only appears once every time you start the program and should not appear again when you select the Remind me later option, if you do not install it straight away. Most updates either fix a bug or add more functionality.

Not quite right.

What John means is anything worked on and saved in a later program version then can't be re-opened in the earlier program as the project file itself is incompatible, rather than projects contents.

Hy Cube Ace - How ya doin Buddy?

"anything worked on and saved in a later program can't be re-opened in the earlier program" Absolutely!

I totally get that my friend. That's usually always the case in similar situations. What I just discovered is that you MUST first indicate which version of MEP to use BEFORE opening the project. If you don't do that the software's chronological memory will simply use the LATEST version and open using that by 'default' Know what I mean? So that was my fault .... so sorry ...

As a matter of personal preference, (although MEP18 has attractive templates) I think I'll settle with MEP17. I'm glad I figured this out ..

I couldn't catch the 'Screen Shot' I wanted but this should suffice:

Thanks Ace!

You are trying to open the MVP from Windows Explorer, not from MEP. Windows remembers the last version installed of a program that uses the extensions. This has nothing to do with MEP, nothing to do with the last version of a program that opened the project; all to do with Windows. If the last version of MEP that you installed was 18 (which, as far as I can tell is actually MX - I have 17, MX, then 2013, 2014, 2015), then when you double-click on an MVP file, Windows will automatically open that last version installed because MVP is now associated with MEP 18. Do no use Windows Explorer to open MVP files this way if you want to be able to keep a project working in an older version. Open the program, then the file. In fact, you should make a habit of doing this.

This is everywhere in Windows. Open Windows parameters and go to file associations or, in W10, "Open Default app settings," "Choose default apps by file type" scroll down until you see .mvp. You will see which version of the program that is associated with this extension.

I think that you will be banging your head against a wall by now going and getting version 17 (not 2017). Just get the latest version (2019) and be done with it.

Hi John you mentioned: "Windows will automatically open that last version" I totally understand that and stated so. "Open the program, then the file" < This is the preferred method - thank you!

As for 'MEP 2018 Plus' and 'Automatic Updates' (unless its a bug) I have no need for templates or the latest hype. I'm not editing for commerical or marketing reasons ... I prefer the option to seek updates manually, (if possible)?

After trying #3 different versions of MEP I've choosen 'MEP 2017 Plus' for its affordability and hopefully less frequent updates? 'Remind Me Later' apparently is not a 'permanent cease'

Generally speaking regarding any software, (not just Magix) unless it involves a security issue or bug, the 'latest and newest' could easily lead to 'Head Banging' (as you stated).

Thanx John CB for pointing out the issue! 🙂

@CarpentersMate

Hi,

I'm lost again. You have been talking about MEP15, MEP17 and MEP18, and now you mention MEP 2018 and MEP 2017. Please, for the sake of clarity, do not use MEP17 when you mean MEP 2017. Both exist, MEP17 is old, MEP 2017 is relatively new.

To add to the confusion, the actual version code is under Help, About and does not correspond to the public naming convention. So it helps if you indicate both. Presently, I have MEP 2019 Premium version 18.0.3.261.

MEP does not do "Automatic updates" and never has, so far as I remember. It advises you that an update is available, and you have the choice of updating or not.

I think that what you are referring to is the "Update Service" which is something different and relatively new.

https://www.magix.com/index.php?id=22791&L=52&C=36

If new features come out, you can get them if you are within your 1 year Update service period. However, bug fixes also come the same way, so it's hard to just get bug fixes and no new features. Also, if a brand new version (like 2019 to 2020) comes out within your 1 year Update service period, it also shows up as an update but the details will tell you that it is a new product. You can also get it, subject to the rules of the Update Service.

What I think that you are looking for is the last full version before the Update Service program started, is this correct? This version would give you bug fixes and no new features. I'm not sure which one that was, but I think that it was MEP 2016, not MEP 2017. However, I could be wrong as I think that I skipped 2017. Looking through my installed programs, I have MEP2016 Premium and then MEP Premium, no year indicated in the title, but a subfolder of 2018 is shown, and also 2019

So, the question is, what is the last version of MEP before the Update Service started?

When you install MEP 2017 Plus, check the version under Help, About and note it (it should be 16.something). Then check for updates, it will propose the last update. Check the details. If the update is still 16..., then you are away and updating will give you the last bug fix (including any previous ones). If it proposes updating to MEP2018 (v17....) or MEP2019 (v18....), then you have a problem - you can't get the last bug fix for MEP2017. If the former, then once that you have updated, do not expect any more updates.

Hi John CB - Nice to see you again - I'm so sorry for the confusion - Yes your question is correct:

"the question is, what is the last version of MEP before the Update Service started?" I'm looking for a version 'Without the Update Service' but still offers H264 Codec and optimized for HD?

The versions I have currently are:

Sorry again for all the confusion (you guys have been patient)

It could be MEP2016? I rather like the feel that I'm working in a stationery platform (not subject to constant change), something like Movie Edit Pro 15.

Thanx Again!
