Difficulties with Burning and DVD menu

Buergmhe wrote on 6/20/2017, 6:21 AM

I am about to finish my first major video editing project, for which I purchased MAGIX Movie Edit Pro Premium (2017). It's been a good experience so far, but unfortunately I am encountering problems at the last step, creating the DVD. I am using the latest update on Windows 10. The movie is about 1.5 h long (single project) and I have 24 chapters, so there are several chapter menu pages.

Problem 1: I have tried using the "Popcorn" template, doing some minor modifications (changing music in the arranger, removing numbering from the chapter menu buttons, in one attempt changing the chapter menu layout). In the preview everything looks great. However, when I play the DVD after burning (tried both real DVDs or using VLC to "play" an .iso), when I enter the chapter menu there are problems: Windows 10 DVD player crashes outright, while in VLC the menu opens, but buttons don't light up on mouseover and the button to the next page of the chapter menu is non-functional. The chapter buttons, while not reacting to the mouseover, do start the movie at the correct chapter. I have tried this with variations a few times, but always with the resulting non functional chapter menu.

Problem 2: In every attempt so far, the burn process completes successfully (a popup informs of the successful conclusion), but subsequently Movie Edit freezes completely, and I have to kill the task with the task manager. This happens both with burning to disk or to image.

Any help would be much appreciated!

Hi

Problem 2 is a known bug, which appears to have been introduced in the last update, and Magix are working on it to fix it.

Problem 1 is also an issue I am having with altering a disc menu if you are removing the numbering by unchecking the box (1) indicated below and changing the music using the option indicated (2) then I have no problems.

However changing the layout of the menu, main or chapter can cause problems.

Please make notes on what you actually change, post the list back here and also raise a support ticket here.

Thanks John,

I had already removed the numbering using the menu method, as indicated - but I can try the option to change the music this way instead of in the arranger. Leaving the layout intact would be OK, although it is a pity given the possibilities of the editor.

The second issue is annoying, but not fatal - but good to know it's being worked on.

I'll keep detailed notes on my next attempt and file an error report - I assume using the "contact technical support" option, correct?

Edit - maybe as a preemptive question - is it safer to create a menu "from scratch" e.g. starting from the default template, rather than using the templates? I mean, if I can't get around the problem described above, should I assume other templates have the same problem and rather do something from scratch?

Hi

. . . . is it safer to create a menu "from scratch" e.g. starting from the default template, rather than using the templates? . . . .

The best template I have found to modify is called Red Smoke and looks like this (with some minor modifications)

Starting from the Default template is currently causing me some issues.

Also save the template after you have modified it - when in edit mode, right click the menu and select Save in last template.

Update: On further testing: it is not possible to change the music via the menu - this brings up a window that it can only be done via the arranger.

Secondly: I used the template without any changes, with the same result - so it seems that (for me at least) the template is broken to begin with. I'll submit a support request accordingly.

Just to finish this up for future readers: I ended up switching to a different template (don't remember the name, the 16:9 one with the Polaroid-photo video previews, available in brown, green and blue (I used blue). Here I did not encounter any of the above problems, and was able to change the menu music and the font and position of buttons without any problems.

Conclusion: for the time being (MEP 16.0.4.98 (UDP), June 2017) I recommend to not use the 16:9 Popcorn template.

Regarding Problem 2 above, an interesting observation was that when I did the final render (to iso) at a higher quality setting (5) overnight, MEP did NOT freeze at the end.

Thanks johnebaker for all the help!
