DVD playback question

jak.willis wrote on 12/13/2018, 3:00 PM

So I used MEP to burn a video to a standard 4.7GB DVD disc for a friend. I tested it on my Blu-ray Player before I sent it and it worked fine. However, my friend has informed me that when she plays it on her machine (a DVD Player), it freezes and skips all the way through.

Can anybody explain to me why this has happened and how I can fix it? I’m a bit confused as to why it would play perfectly fine on my player but not on my friend’s.

@jak.willis

There can be many reasons for a disc not to playback correctly on another player:

  1. Disc type is not compatible - eg disc is DVD+R which is not playable on some players - DVD-R is more compatible and in my experience more reliable.

  2. Disc is an economy disc which can give compatibility issues with some players.

  3. The bitrate setting in the Burn dialog has been set too high - some players cannot handle higher bit rates - the default burn setting should be used as they are compatible with the majority of players.

  4. There is a head alignment discrepancy between the burner and the second player.

Hi John,

I have a feeling it may be the third reason you gave, the one about setting the bitrate too high. Is it more likely that a standard DVD player will struggle to cope with higher bitrates than a Blu-ray player? Because, as I said in my post, I have a Blu-ray player which I tested the disc on and it played perfectly fine. But, my friend has a DVD player and she claims that the disc plays but all the way through it is freezing & skipping.

The most common reasons I find for dvds skipping or freezing on other players when they are fine on mine are:-

1) They rarely use their dvd player and the lens needs cleaning and/or fine dust has accumulated inside the player.

2) Recordable dvds are very soft compared with shop bought films and can get scratched easily even on first insert if the user is not careful. Even finger marks can cause problems.

Hi

. . . . I have a feeling it may be the third reason you gave, the one about setting the bitrate too high . . . .

Did you increase the bitrate from the default setting in the Burn dialog - if so try burning a DVD at the default setting and playing that on the DVD player.

Hi John,

Yeah, I did increase the bitrate from the default value, so I’ll try it again leaving it at default and see if that fixes the problem.
