Editing my Pixel 2 1080p video with Vegas Pro

I am using Vegas Pro 16. I was gifted a new (to me) Pixel 2 smartphone over the holidays. Shot some nice footage which was in 1080/30 fps (aproximately 30 fps). Footage plays beautifully on the phone, and, as it was automatically uploaded to Google Photos, played beautifully from there back to me or anyone with whom I shared it. I decided I wanted to add some text, fades, etc, so imported to Vegas Pro. Everything went well. I uploaded the finished rendering to Google Photos, but, when I view that file on my laptop or on my phone, the subject matter occupies a tiny rectangle surrounded by a sea of black. The footage, played on my PC appears fine. I should mention that the footage was shot in portrait orientation.

I reopened the.veg file in Vegas, and changed the dimensions under properties to 2160 x 3840, and can see in the preview window that these dimensions work. The problem is that, when I want to render, my choice of templates that offer 2160 result in non-mp4 files.

What can I do to obtain 2160 mp4 renderings, or, alternatively, what might I do to correct the appearance of the footage already rendered?

I have since purchased a gimbal and will be shooting mostly in landscape orientation moving forward. I haven't rendered any landscape footage to date, but will check to see if the problem persists there as well.

If my render options cannot overcome this problem, then my mobile phone will see very little use for shooting video.

My experience makes me believe that Vegas is the most flexible of any editor at dealing with varying formats. I hope someone can help me.

Thanks.
