Export .MPG ?

grahamm7 wrote on 11/25/2020, 3:41 AM

Having produced a video to share with others I exported in MPEG. However it has a .MPG extentions and not .MP4 which is the normal MPEG format that I am used to. It didn't seem to me that players often recognised .MPG compared to .MP4. So I then used a video convertor to change it to the format with .MP4 that I am more used to. I think these formats are due to the different formats or versions of MPEG1... etc... But this is not an area that I am familar with . I wonder why when I ask for MPEG from Magix Video Editor pro it doesn't export in MP4 format?

Hi Graham.

Can you give a screen shot of the file extension please? Also what do you mean as the term 'Player'. Do you mean as a file to share on a PC or laptop, or in a DVD player on a disc?

Most software players will play most video files. If you get a particular file that won't play, download something like VLC player that works with pretty much every codec out there.

File extensions and types as they appear on my PC.

Also how do you share files and what are the original source files from before you export them?

Ray.

Don't think a screen shot will help. But when I export from Video Editor selecting MPEG it produces a file with an extension of .MPG not .MP4. Having investigated - see link: http://www.iorgsoft.com/compare/mp4-vs-mpg-comparison.html So Magix are producing the file with MPEG 1 or 2 compression rather than MPEG4. That is fine but MS Windows and many other OS will not recognise or play .MPG as I found out when I shared the video. When I converted to MPEG4 with a .MP4 extension my friend on his PC could play it straight away. Of course some Apple products will cope with .MPG ok. But surely the Video Edtior Pro should be able to output in MPEG4 .MP4 as well???

Ok I missed the MPEG4 that is lower down on the selection of exports - sorry I will explore this further.

Hi Graham.

Windows Video Player will play MPEG files but possibly if you don't change the default setting from interlaced to progressive in the export dialogue box. I have no problem playing such MPEG files in Windows Video Player.

The file you see highlighted in blue in my previous screenshot above was produced to test the export before I replied to your question.

Interlaced files are normally meant to be played on old TV sets or via a DVD disc so I changed the export parameters for playback on a PC.

That was purely for an experiment to see if there were problems with the export before reporting back but normally I stick to producing either MP4 exports or HEVC depending on the final intended use.
