Exporting DVD Interlaced Programme as MP4 Progressive

discburn wrote on 12/3/2018, 10:28 AM

Recently I remastered a DVD. The VOB files are PAL 720x576 50i 4:3.

I want to make a highest quality MP4 from my timeline, while still retaining the original 4:3, ie with black either side in the 16:9.

If I export from VPX6, what are the best settings to achieve this?

In particular, how good is VPX6's deinterlacing, since the resulting MP4 file is progressive - 25p?

If VPX6's deinterlacing is not so good, my plan is to export my timeline as Uncompressed AVI, then open that in a programme like WonderShare or Movavi, since I believe they have deinterlacing options on board, and convert to MP4.

All suggestions appreciated!

Hi Seamus

. . . . The VOB files are PAL 720x576 50i 4:3. I want to make a highest quality MP4 from my timeline, while still retaining the original 4:3, ie with black either side in the 16:9. . . . .

IMHO using the default mp4 bitrate settings is sufficient for the low resolution of 720*576 .

The limiting factor in terms of the visible quality of output is dependent on the screen size and resolution of the device(s) the mp4 file is played on, ie the larger the screen and higher the resolution the worse the image is going to look and there is nothing you can do to stop this.

Thanks John,

After testing, I found VPX export to progressive from interlaced to be as good as or better than using 'standalone' converters.

And I’m using VPX's own MP4 default for export.
