Extra software programs being installed in wrong directory

Magix Movie Editor Pro Premium Version 21.0.2.130 (UDP3) Windows 10

I bought and installed Magix Movie Editor Pro 2022 and it wanted to download a load of extra programs which is fine by me. The problem is they automatically start downloading them to my 'C' drive which is for system files only. 'E' is where software is installed on my computer.

When the installation starts there's no way to tell it to install to 'E' instead of 'C'.

Is there a way around this as I need these extra programs to get the best results out of Movie Editor Pro?

Thanks a lot.

Hi Michael.

I can't answer your original question but see in your profile under About that you have Windows 7 mentioned as being installed.

Are you aware that MEP 2022 does not run on Win 7?

Also could you put that information in your signature please and Micheal in the About section?

Thank you.

Ray.

Hi

. . . . When the installation starts there's no way to tell it to install to 'E' instead of 'C'. . . .

That is correct the extras will be installed to C:\Users\Public\Documents\MAGIX\Common\Videocontent\Movie Edit Pro Premium.

Is the C:\ drive too small to install these components there and still have at least 20% of the drive capacity free?

Yep, your right I hadn't updated that in some time but now changed it to 10 instead of 7. Sorry about that. Everything else is the same. The 'C' drive is always going RED and I've got to start deleting stuff just to get it back in the green. ( A terrible setup) There's certainly not enough space for all those extra programs to be downloaded too. So I don't know what I can do to divert it to 'E' where there's 800GB of free space. You'd think someone at Magix would be able to change the default letter to 'E' just once.

Hi Michael

If only it was that easy!

The locations programs can use for installing components of programs are more or less defined by Windows. In the case of the extra content it is put into the C:\Users\Public\Documents.

This folder is accessible to all users on your computer so that if a program is installed for all users to be able to access, they already have the correct permissions for this folder.

It is possible to move the Public user folders to another internal drive - never to a USB connected drive, however a Windows upgrade may revert this back to the standard location.

This Microsoft article details how - do note this involves editing in the Registry, is not guaranteed to work, may mean reinstalling all software that has components in the Public user subfolders, and you do so at your own risk.

Hi John

I had all this information before as this isn't the first time this has happened. What I was thinking was setting up a folder in C and installing the extras in that then transferring it to E afterward. But would Movie Editor Pro still find it if I moved it?

Please let me know before I try.

Thanks.

Michael.

Hi,

First off, by "extra programs" do you mean the Additional Content? If so, this in not "extra programs." Please use the correct terminology - it's on your screen. If not, then what do you mean?

When the installation starts there's no way to tell it to install to 'E' instead of 'C'.

Not true. When you install the program, you get this screen:

Select "Change default settings."

1. Change the location for the installation to another drive. I do not recommend this.

2. Change the location of the video content (Additional content) to another drive. This is where you will get many GB of content. This, I recommend changing to another drive.

User files: My documents is defined in Windows as under Drive B. This is a Windows thing. You can simply point this to a similar path on your E drive, like E:\MAGIX\Movie Edit Pro Premium. Then, in MEP, go to Program Settings, Folders and create and link to subfolders.

First off, I'm new to Video editor and the additional content are different programs to an old bloke like me, so I'll call them what I want seeing as they're being downloaded to MY COMPUTER.

Secondly, I'm not getting that first window, that's the reason I'm here listening to people like you ( Please use the correct terminology).

I'll work it out for myself.

@Michael-OCallaghan

The first screen which @browj2 shows is the first screen that appears when MEP itself is first installed. That is where you can change the installation location of the main program.

The second screen is what immediately appears if you choose the option which John highlights to Change Default settings, before the installation of the main program. There you can change the install location for the Additional Content.

If you did not check carefully what is on those screens then ALL default locations would have been "set" for the program and that Additional Content.

In your situation, if it is important/vital that this Additional Content NOT be installed on your C:\ drive, your only option may well be to completely remove your current installation of MEP - the use of Revo Uninstaller Free is highly recommended for this purpose since it helps to ensure everything from the previous installation is removed. Then reboot your computer and reinstall the program, taking care to check fully each screen to ensure that the default locations are changed to your specific requirements.

By the way, these are user to user forums, where users and moderators give their time freely to try and help others. Whatever your feelings about the advice you have been given, politeness is always appreciated!

If you don't use the terminology used by the program or at least close to it, then you are asking us to guess at what you mean. When that happens, we often end up trying to solve the wrong problem. Please use words that are on the screen or give us screen shots so that we don't have to guess.

See my first image of my previous message. The second selection is for "Select additional software." If you leave that unchecked, then you will get extra programs that you probably don't want or need. That is one problem. I always uncheck the box. Is this what you mean by "extra programs?"

Or do you mean the "Additional program content" as shown below?

which will install the following:

also available under Help with a slightly different name (Install extra content):

If you have the first case, additional software or programs, then simply uninstall them.

If it's the second case, then you have a bigger problem. I dislike telling people to reinstall the program, but, unless someone has a better solution, reinstall the program and put the additional content (Templates and Effects) on a different drive as I indicated in my previous message.

Secondly, you did indeed get the first window. I have recorded the installation of the last several versions of Movie Edit Pro and that window has always been there (same in other Magix software). You are not the first person to insist that it's not there, but it was there and they, like you, just clicked on "Agree and install" without actually looking at what was there.

If you reinstall, watch for the window and change the installation locations.
