Fade in Date as Title has the time wrong

FunkyB wrote on 10/15/2020, 9:05 AM

I'm trying to the use "Fade in date as title..." but it always shows the wrong time. The time in the resulting text object is exactly 9 hours behind the "Modified" Date of the video file (the date and time it was actually recorded). In Properties and in the Import pane it shows the time correctly. It happens with all .MTS and ,MP4 files I import and I have to go and change the time manually which kind of defeats the purpose.

Does anyone know how I can get around this? It's a shame because this would otherwise be a very convenient feature.

A similar issue was discussed in an older post "Display Running Date and Time," but it was years and versions ago, isn't the same function, and doesn't seem to contain a solution or even clearly explain why this would happen.

Hi

. . . . The time in the resulting text object is exactly 9 hours behind the "Modified" Date of the video file (the date and time it was actually recorded) . . . .

Was the video recorded in a different location with time zone difference of 9 hours, if so did you set the camera to local time or your home time, and are the videos GPS tagged?

Check the Media created date in the Details tab of the objects properties in Windows Explorer.

Hi

In addition to above this is what I see when using a GPS tagged image, the time zone difference was -13 hrs, from what the camera was set to (UK time) and the GPS offset (New Zealand time)

Videos from this camera are not tagged the same way so I do not have this issue with them.

Hi

Well, I can see that the date on the timeline is the GMT time of the video. I'm in the Tokyo time zone (GMT +9 hrs.), and the timeline time is always 9 hours behind the actual time the video was shot. So at least I know what the problem is now.

However, the videos were all shot in that timezone and my computer is set to the same. The videos are not GPS tagged. Even the .mp4s from smartphones don't have any GPS tagging and location services were off on that phone when the video was shot. My camera doesn't do GPS tagging (I tag photos with software when importing, but have never done that for videos).

Another strange thing is that in your example, the Properties > Details > "Media created" date matches what is shown on the video timeline, but in my case the "Media created" date is the same as the "Date modified".  (Date modified is the date the video was shot; Date created is the date the file was copied to the local HDD.)

. . . . Another strange thing is that in your example, the Properties > Details > "Media created" date matches what is shown on the video timeline . . . .

The example I gave was for a still image as seen in the images, looking into this further I have found that I have videos displaying the same differences in the Date Modified vs Media created tags when taken in a different time zone.

Check you cameras time settings, using my video camera as an example, the 'Home' Area (Time zone) setting is set to London, and I set a local time eg Tokyo, the timestamps are different and the 2 tags appear to be using different sources ie

  • Date Modified tag is using the Home zone time
  • Media Created tag is using the Local time.

If I set the alternate Area (Time zone) on the camera, I can switch between zones without touching the clock settings, the clock is automatically changed to local time relative to the Home time the 2 tags then get matching times.

I never used this feature before, however I will be now to save a lot of time zone correcting.

MEP appears to look for the Media created date first, if this is empty then it uses the Date Modified tag.

In my case, Media created and Date Modified are both the same date, the date the video was shot in my time zone. However, MEP doesn't use either of those and always uses the GMT time of videos. Now that I'm clear on this, maybe I should contact support.

If I open Object Properties from the timeline, instead of the media import list, I get a different dialog box. For videos from my smartphone, this only shows Date: as the same date as Media created and Date Modified.

For MTS files from my camera, there is an additional tab Meta Data and in that there is an entry Record Date which looks like the same time, but in 12 hr time and lacking am/pm marking.

I checked my camera settings. My smartphone doesn't have any settings in the camera app related to time zones, only the system wide settings which obviously shouldn't be changed to something other than my actual location.
