FX appears but does not work

Movie Studio 17 Platinum. Windows 10

Everything worked OK previously then the FX for the video events has just stopped working. The respective dialogue boxes appear (for instance brightness / contrast) and the sliders can be moved but they have no effect in the preview. I have re-installed but no luck. Also I noticed on YouTube someone toggled the split screen button - again no luck.
