What you probably need to be using are volume curves for individual objects.

The playback icon you found is. besides muting, used for control scrubbing behavior -- whether or not you can follow audio when you move the playback cursor by hand.

Hi

The playback volume (of the preview of the Timeline) can only be altered via Windows and your soundcard. Right click the speaker icon in the Task bar  and open the mixer while MEP is playing and you will see a slider for Magix, or just double click the Task bar speaker icon and adjust the slider.
