How can I overcome burn issue on DVD for MEP 2015?

mbond132 wrote on 8/5/2015, 1:39 PM

I have created a project that has ended up over 65 minutes long.  It will require more than 1 disc to create a DVD, if I use the HDTV DVD option setting.  I have tried to set the quality encoding to a high setting, but I have not managed to complete the burn process.

One disc did appear to complete, but when we sat down to watch, there were only the first 2 chapters burned (that was using CRT TV option settings).

Now trying to use the higher seting, I get this error log:

Do I convert the project to a different version (MPEG, AVi, etc) and try to burn that?

And yes, I am pretty new to this software.

Hi

. . . . Do I convert the project to a different version (MPEG, AVi, etc) and try to burn that? . . . . .

No, you either have to shorten the movie or use a Blu-ray disc.

You are trying to burn a HD movie onto a DVD disc using the Blu-ray or AVCHD disc option -  this can be done however the movie must be no longer than ~ 25 - 30 mins.

MEP is complaining that the disc is the wrong type for the full 60 mins + length of the movie and cannot split the movie over more than one disc because it is expecting a BD disc.- hence the message.

To get the fulll movie onto a disc you will have to either split the project into two independent 25 - 30 min projects and burn each seperately to DVD disc, or use a BD disc if you have a Blu-ray burner.

Thanks John.  Looks like I need to go back to school to read, lol.  I misread the settings requirements and was trying to create a Blu-ray movie using a DVD burner!!  Schoolboy error.

So, if I want to create a 65 minute DVD, is this possible using the MEP 2015 software, or are there filesize and time limitations?  This time, using the DVD settings, of course.

Or, am I maybe better getting an external Blu-ray burner in order to create such a large movie?

The only other option I have, then, is to split the movie down into the manageable segements?  I ended up creating the complete movie by making shorter sub sections and then exporting them, as I was having the judder issue with the timeline (you may recall?).  I exported each as a Magix movie and then created one big movie with these.  Perhaps that wasn't the best option?

Thanks again

Mick

Yes this is possible - for both DVD (and BD if you had a BD burner) - normal max time for single layer discs is approx 120 miniutes.

To get maximum quality of DVD playback on a HD TV I recommend you set the Bitrate setting to maximum, to do this see image below - click 1 then adjust slider 2 and confirm settings.

If MEP cannot fit this on the disc it will tell you and ask to adjust the bitrate,

. . . . The only other option I have, then, is to split the movie down into the manageable segements? . . . .

Only if you want it as Blu-ray on a DVD disc.

Hi John.

I tried adjusting the encoder settings and got the time to 1 hour and the filesize OK to fit on the DVD+RW, but it has still only burned the first 3 chapters, which is the furthest I have got.

I am guessing that my ambitious attempt at making a movie of our 3 weeks in Mauritius is simply too large to burn onto the DVD.  I wonder if there is a way to reduce the filesize without removing too much from the movie?  If not, then back to editing the trip might be the only way?

Any other ideas will be gratefully accepted and tried out.  Thank you in advance

Hmm, so the frustration continues.  I wondered if it was the shear filesize that was stopping this, so looked at what I had done.

1. Created a set of mini movies, capturing events, visits, etc of a similar theme and then exported these as Magix Movies.

2. Each of these had MP3 music tracks included, with some editing done to the sound, so that I can hear the speech, background noises, etc.

3. I then created a new project in which I brought back each of the Magix Movies in turn, aligning these in my preferred sequence.

4. Set to burn, with the menu I liked applied and in the burn preview, all of the chapters set in the larger project, worked OK and were present.

5. Burned the DVD using the adjusted bitrate, but still, only the 1st 3 chapters are on the DVD.  The only other messages I get during the burn start up is about gaps, which I want, and the question about using the VTS01.  I answered that one USE ALL.  Maybe that was wrong?

I am going again, this time instead of adjusting the bitrate in the burn questions sequence, I am going to try splitting across 2 DVDs.

I have some images of the process...

I didn't get the same message this time, relating to the VTS usage, so this is different.

Hi

I answered that one USE ALL.  Maybe that was wrong?

I would say so. This message means that the burn will use previously encoded files instead of encoding using any of the new settings or changes you have made.

Massive thanks to johnebaker and to Scenestealer.  The movie has been burned to x2DVDs last night and we sat and watched some great footage.  As I said, I was new to the software and must thank you guys for your patience and support.

Now I will go and look at splitting the project into 2 and maybe adding some text at the end of what will be the 1st disc, so it "ends", reminding the viewer to insert disc 2, lol!  It will finish it off nicely, I think.

I will also try different asnwers to the software questions, to see what the other results will be.  Another lesson learned is not to use DVD+RW discs for multi disc projects, as the system doesn't see a full disc and writes both discs onto the same, resulting in only the 2nd disc ready for viewing!!

Again, thank you for the help.  What a relief, lol
