How to ad a title?

I need put subtitle under a video clip.

I select Title – Standard – Subtitles small.

I expected a feild appearing under the clip just as an icon Standard I pressed on shows.

But it covers clip with black screen and text on the middle!

What next? Where is help on titles - subtitles?

I get a black box as well in MEP17+, but only until I click on either the checkmark or the cancel symbol. Then the text becomes outlined by a dotted marquee and can be positioned or re-sized.
